Calling all gtx 580 owners!! (gtx 580 overclocking)

post #1 of 32
Thread Starter
Okay guys, we need to make a thread, like the gtx 570 overclocking thread, for people to help each other with overclocks on the 580.

In my opinion, it is much harder to overclock a 580, i've never had this many troubles oc'ing a gpu ever. With the ocp enabled, and even with it disabled, I have yet to find a 100% stable overclock on my gtx 580.

What kind of results have you guys been getting? What kind of programs do you use to test stability and for how long? And how many volts do you guys use for 24/7 use and/or benchmarking use?

Hi,
nice idea.

As i haver still XP, here are my criterias to say "OK" to my overclocks :

3DMark06 => 3 times without any crashes, bug or artefacts.
Furmark (In 1920x1200, MSSA 32X, heating test) => 30mns
3 hours of my favorite games : Black Ops, MW.

If all these steps are ok, I consider my overclok as ok for me.

Of course, I know there are more stressing tests (OCCT, etc....) than mine that could help to declare my overclock stable or not...But I don't use them.

I wait for some good advises here to check what other people do.

At the moment, i am at :

920/1840/2300@Vgpu=1,135V => Stable in 3DMark06 and Furmark.

I have now to test in games.
My fan is at 100% (5000rpm).

Mine will do 945/2300 stable at 1.113 volts. It does have a water block on it and max temps it hits are 41 C. To stress test I run the crysis benchmark DX10 with everything all the way up 80 times over night. If it passes this then i am satisfied smile.gif As for benching i have ran it at 1.135 volts at 985/2300

I do 15 runs ~15min of the Metro 2033 Benchmark, everything maxed out, DOF, and GPU Physx enabled.

Furmark and OCCT are, imo, useless for the 580. And the Metro benchmark is the only thing that has been able to test SLI well for me.

This is a very good way of testing for stability, thank you!

Also, the heaven benchmark and folding are a good way to test for stability. Heaven was able to catch a slight bit of instability in a memory overclock I did. Now I am heaven and metro stable at 850mhz core and 4280mhz effective for the memory.

Now, onto folding! smile.gif

Thanks for all the tips guys, should help a lot of people oc their 580's!

Very much agree with the OP. Best i have been able to do stable, on air, was 850/2050. To get there I had to push voltage to 1.050 which i never had to do for such a mild OC on the 480s. The MSIs were ok at 850 w/stock voltage, but the Zotac wasn't (tri-SLI). I'd be willing to try to push it a bit farther, but the fan noise gets obnoxious enough that I don't think it's worth it really.

I have to say I'm not feeling the same 580 love vs the 480s that the rest of the world seems to. My 480s OCd easily to 825/1000 and never got obnoxiously hot or loud. The 580s seem about the same noise wise with voltage pushed, are only hitting 850, aren't really that much cooler (maybe like 8c under load) and aren't all that much faster (I do think the crap drivers are the culprit here though)

The stock voltage on my msi 580 is 1.050v, so I haven't touched the volts at all, and don't plan to. The heat really kicks up when the volts are pushed and I'm hoping to keep this oc when the summer starts.

Well guys, I just let my folding client on overnight, and I woke up to errors with the program, even though it was stable in both heaven and metro 2033. My current settings are 840/1680/2140. Back to testing. lol

Max stable overclock:

1.213v
930 Core
1860 Shader
1100 Memory

Stability test: F@H GPU3 Client for 12 hours per night.

If you can complete a few WU on GPU3, then you can pretty much guarantee the card is stable. It is the best stability test by far.

I agree with you on that one. My settings were perfectly stable in metro 2033 and heaven, but in F@H GPU3, it wasn't. tongue.gif
