New Holiday Home Server & Rack Build =D

Got a enclosed rack for free from a public storage box that someone stopped paying for. Thing was brand new from like 1990... Smoked front glass w/ intake fans on the bottom of the back.

Decided to do some rewiring in the house to TRY to clean some stuff up, but there is too many devices in this damn place.

Anyways....

The Specs:
- Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise Ed.
- Gigabyte EP35C-DS3R Motherboard
- 8 GB of Corsair Dominator DDR2 1066mhz
- Q9550
- 2x Intel Gigabit Desktop CT Nics
- HP Smart Array p400 w/ 512mb Memory Module and BBU
- 2x 32Pin SAS to 4x SATA Cables
- 8x Seagate Constellation ES ST32000644NS 2TB 7200 RPM
- 2x Seagate Constellation ES ST3500514NS 500GB 7200 RPM 32MB (Raid1 for OS)
- iStarUSA TC-RPSL20 20" Sliding Rail Kit for Most Rackmount Chassis - OEM
- iStarUSA BPU-230SATA-RED 2x5.25" to 3x3.5" SATA Hot-swap Raid Cage - OEM
- iStarUSA D-410-B10SA Black Zinc-Coated Steel 4U Rackmount Server Case
- Scythe KM02-BK 5.25" Bay Fan Controller
- 2x Scythe DFS123812-3000 "ULTRA KAZE" 120 x 38 mm Case Fan
- Scythe Big Shuriken SCBSK-1000 120mm CPU Cooler
- Corsair AX750 PSU

Currently the Raid6 is set up with 8 Drives (1 Hot spare) so its ~10TB usable. If I want to utilize the hotspare and still have double redundancy from the two drives worth of parity on the array, I would be just under 12TB. More than enough for my growing media collection/music/document folders/software/personal data/etc. Only about 4.5TB used when I copied my old stuff over.

Switch is a Cisco Small Business (aka linksys) 24 port managed gigabit switch. Which handles all wired connections in the house. ISP is 25/25mbps Verizon Fios, running of their latest model actiontec router (which has amazing throughput for a service provided router.)

Also have my 2x Tripplite 2500W UPS's w/ extended batteries in the bottom which power most of the electronics in the house.

Thinking about getting 2 more of the 2TB ES drives for another 2TB storage and a hot spare... but will have to see...

Currently running a domain... IIS, DHCP, DNS, DyDns are on the server... HyperV is running a internal seedbox with some "added" external routing and a gaming server that I host whatever on, currently just Mumble & a linked mapping program for players called UOAM (for the game Ultima Online). Recently also converted my subnet to a lesser used scope and will be setting up a VM to handle VPN requests since I am always moving around for work and often need to get into my files. Seamless mapped drives seems worth a try compared to always having to log into logmein and dumping files in a http directory or an FTP folder.

Have a old netgear 4 bay nas unit that runs an older windows 2003 storage server that has two nics, which i might convert into an opensource firewall or something else when I get bored.

I know the wire management is garbage but it didn't really feel necessary with all the open space in the case and the great ventilation, temps for Intake/Exhaust are like 24C In, 27C Out and the CPU is mostly at idle ~ 30C.

7 wired client PC's (excluding 3 laptops) and then like another 2-3 small devices... (ie: video distribution, home automation, boat instrumentation (lol.), etc.)

Somehow i actually almost have the 24 port switch filled, but thats mainly due to having the house wired up in cat-6..

I've got a Video Distribution system in the house, FIOS and TVs need internet, Sprint airrave for cell service, sorta all added up i guess haha.

The UPS's provide power to all Computers, Monitors, A/V Receivers, FIOS, HDTVs, Sound Systems, etc in the house... each room is wired with separate AC outlets for UPS or non-switched power.

Basically boils down to having far too much time on my hands up until about a year ago...

Had most of it. (switch, rack, motherboard, ram, raid controller, 1000ft of cat6)

Bought the CPU, Hard Drives, fans, server chassis, heatsinks... I dunno probably around 2k or so..

Would have went with a 1366 board and a i7 950, but I could not, for the life of me, get the hp smart array controller to work on anything except this p35 board I had.

Cable Management... 10/10. That's actually pretty good for a server though.

This reminds me of the furnace in a christmas story. If I ever get talented enough to build such a contraption I would only paint it black and have a random noise and smoke generator to scare the kids and the wife away from it.

Great Job!
