Will My System Bottleneck a 5790?

Thread Starter
Hello Everyone!

Last February I built a computer that I use solely for gaming. I am now looking to do a huge upgrade to a 5970. I was wondering if my chipset, CPU, or anything would hold back this card from doing its full potential.
System Specs:

Gigabyte GA-MA78LM-S2H (Has 730G North Bridge)
Phenom II x2 555 BE
2GB Wintec DDR2 @ 800MHz

I defiantly plan on getting a new PSU of a minimum of 750 watts to support this card, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks for your help!

Hey, I don't know the answer to your question but your title says the wrong card. Just a heads up!

Yh, it would, you need to OC the hell out of that processor, to even come close. Unless you get a really high res monitor/multiple monitors then you might get away with it.

I would recomend at least 4GB of DDR3 RAM with Win7. And as far as CPU bottleneck, I doubt it, but you would really need to test this yourself. As previous poster said you may need a more solid OC on the CPU.

Yes it will, even my quad at 4.0 bottlenecks my 6870s at some things but I think you will be worse off. Get a new psu and a new cpu if you can manage it, as long as you run everything at your max res with everything cranked it will help to reduced the burden on your x2.

Yes. Get an 1090T+ an 890FXE board before you do anything.

Edit: Try unlocking the 555 to a B55. If you can get that to 4.0 than you'll probably be fine.

I already attempted that and it was unsuccessful.

And even for games you think that I will need a hexa core and the best AMD chipset? And what purpose would DDR3 serve in this equation?

DDR3 is faster. Period.

For games I would say a Phenom II quad at 4.0GHZ won't be a bottleneck at all. A 4.0GHZ Dual WILL be a bottleneck, and definitely for games like Battlefield: Bad Company 2 you will see CPU usage spiking to 100%. Hell I get 50% on my hexa core.

Maybe you could save for an 1055T+ a TA890FXE(should be only $300 or so) when you get your 5970. Games will start using 6 cores soon, though, and that's why I say get the 1055T. They usually require 1.5-1.55V for 4.0 unlike some of the higher end hexas but it's just harder with the locked multiplier.

Hmm I wouldn't go phenom personally with a 5970.

Go i5, it beats the 1090t by a fair bit in games and at 4.0ghz it will be bloody fast.

Yep. And it's a bit cheaper than the 1090t.

You definitely need more than 2 cores and 2 GB RAM to get the full performance out of a 5970.
