Question about i7 overclocking - Page 2

Yes, I take some responsibility for the extra temp... On reflection I think it is my 980X at 1.35 and change and my QPI at 1.4, not my 920. My 920 is quite a bit lower. MY BAD!! SORRY!

So as we start to pare that away to about 1.3(and change)... and 1.35 for QPI.

You've taken a REALLY big first step, by the way... so expect to do quite a bit of monkeying as you make your adjustments.

Oh I see. QPI/DRAM Core Voltage = 1.4, Does that have anything to do with it beeing high? And not sure what LCC is. i swear I tried prime 95 @ 4ghz and 4.1, cpu volt = 1.32 andQPI/DRAM Core Voltage = 1.32, and the temps where around 87 after 1 hour.

That makes sense, the 980X is using a 32nm process vs the 920's 45 nm process.

well the QPI/DRAM is the IMC voltage on the CPU. 1.4 isn't to high for it but make sure you try to keep your memory voltage and QPI/DRAM voltage within .5 volts of each other. LLC stands for Loud Line Calibration, it helps keep vDrooping from moving the voltages around so much.

So I try Cpu volt: 1.3 and QPI: 1.35? I am trying on 4.2Ghz. I've already made 4.1Ghz stable, not sure how much further I should go really, not sure if it is worth it.

Well 4.1Ghz is a good overclock, I wouldn't push it any further. Now you have to try to get those temps down.

Ok thanks guys! I was able to do a stress test on 4Ghz and get max temp: 75 C. Doing the same for 4.2Ghz, the max temp is 87 C. So I don't think the extra 0.2Ghz is worth it for the heat it produces. Will be watercooling my system soon, and hoping to reach 4.5Ghz

Thanks Eno! You have a 980X yourself
Such a beast! If you watercooled that thing I'm sure you could produce so many Ghz the world would explode!

Or my case would- knowing my luck!

I'm also running a 920 but it's just treading water at 3.8 right now. This week is the week I get THAT system running as well as yours!

I read about how having Revision D0 helped a lot when you overclock, is this true?

When I am stress testing, and everything freezes, is that the same as BSOD? I tried to lower the volts when I was stress testing @4.2 (to get the temps down) and windows just froze. Is there any other tweaks I can do to avoid the freezing? I think it was cpu volt: 1.34 and QUI: 1.35 and 4.2ghz on prime 95. If I put the volt to 1.35 everything works fine, but I get the temperature: 87C after an hour.
