RoddimusPrime, i just bought the original under your recommendation. I hope you're right. How does it support Netflix? Via app or via the website (doesn't that require Silverlight?)?

LINK 2 which is a forum for WDTV, custom firmware, and general help

I assume you need to follow his links for info on the custom firmware that will enable you to access it.

Follow this Link
to answer your Netflix questions. Essentially you can use PlayOn if you have any troubles to access things like Netflix, Hulu, and more which is more than what the WDTV standard firmware gives.

Update: The regular WDTV they are selling is the old generation 1 model. Not sure why since they discontinued support for the model (this is the one left in stock). The common concern is DTS which seems to be flaky (actually, non existent, but you can try bitstream/passthrough and other methods, but it isn't worth it as less time is spent converting the file with a guaranteed result). Typically for most this is not a concern. The custom firmware cannot provide a permanent fix for this as it is part of the hardware. You would need the next step up.

Thus for those really needing that I recommend the WDTV Live or ASUS O!Play (their main competitor besides the proprietary Apple TV.).

Its not flaky its non existent. Unless you are talking about bitstreaming or passthrough I'm not sure.

But if you have it hooked up to a tv. The WDTV can not decode DTS period. You must convert all movies with DTS to AC3.

Its a known limitation of the original model.

I am talking about bitstreaming/passthrough/converting/.etc which is why if you are keen on it I made the recommendations I did.

It certainly is not worth the hassle to try to do an obscene amount of workarounds to try and get it to work. And at that it certainly isn't native and not guaranteed. What is guaranteed is a headache.

Yah I bought it when it very first came out. Would like to pick up a live. Do these come in and out of stock often?

The original's can't stream. Only the Live and Live+ can stream. I have the Live+ and at first there were only a few apps but they recently released the new firmware which I was able to dl it last week. I think it added youtube and a few others but thats the only app i use anyways. There wasn't one for Hulu, however. But I guess you could install it yourself... Other apps include Netflix, Pandora, Flickr, etc.
