1x 16x + 1x 8x or 2x 8x ?

Thread Starter
Hi guys,

I’ve encoutered yet _another_ problem with building my Folding rig.
My mainboard has 4 PCI-E slots: 2x 16x and 2x 8x and I have 2x GTX 460.
I currently have one GTX 460 in a 16x slot, but I can’t get my other GTX 460 to fit in the other 16x slot, so I had to put it into the 8x slot. So I have now have one in the 16x and the other one in the 8x slot.

So, I was wondering: Is it better to put them BOTH in the 8x slots ?

Thanks !

Bandwidth does not make a difference, just stick them where they fit.

Hi.

At this moment, both should be running at x8.

x1 x4 x8 x16 doesn't matter for folding, if it fits, it'll fold

even if it doesn't fit, it'll still fold, but you need a good dremel

Woa thanks for the quick replies guys !

Alright, so it doesn't matter in which slot I jam them, as long they're folding. Great !

The rig isn't done yet. Hardware wise, yes it is, but now I have to overclock it and after that configure the clients.
There's still a lot that can and probably will go wrong. So far this build has been an absolute nightmare. Everything but when I say everything I really mean everything that can go wrong when building a PC, went wrong. Seriously, everything. Starting with a wrong delivered PSU to a dead mobo (out of the blue) etc etc.. you name it.

Folding on 8x will be perfectly fine. About a year ago I remember the discussion about taking a slight PPD hit when folding on 1x slots which will be more noticeable as cards become more powerful but you can fold on any PCIe slot without too much of a performance loss.

Has anyone tried a Fermi (higher end, like a 470/480) on an x1 or x4 slot yet? I've yet to see what the PPD is like for them on a lower bandwidth slot.

yeah it doesn't matter which one it goes into as long as it's a PCI-E connection exactly what everybody posted above.

at least it was DOA instead of it breaking after the warranty period.

I'm doing that right now. That's what my project Fire Sail is about. I'm going to try and put a GTS450 and GTX570 on a PCI-E 1x slot using a modified riser. if it works then I can use 6 GPU's on one system using ribbon cables and save the money of having to buy more expensive 6x PCI-E 16x motherboards.

shipping from China takes forever...

...heh, I see you posted in it already...

Nu-uh; you got a GTS 450. My gut feeling tells me that x1 will make no difference for that. But only just...
