Setting Up My SSD

Thread Starter
Hey everyone, I just got my SSD and need help setting it up.

I pretty much need step by step instructions, I have never done any Hard Drive upgrades.

I am looking to put my OS on it first and foremost, nothing else at the moment.

I have been told to turn on AHCI mode on my BIOS, but not sure what to do after.

Any quick help is greatly welcomed as I want to do this today.

First disconnect all hard drives but the ssd, then turn AHCI on in the bios BEFORE you install Windows. After you reboot, install Windows 7 from the installation disk. Once you are in Windows install the latest drivers and make sure your firmware is up to date on the ssd.

You wont need a new key if you use a new HDD, if it says it has already been used just call MS and tell them you have a new HDD then they will activate for you.

Also, remember to run Windows Experience Index afterwards.

That will optimize your Windows installation for the SSD (no prefetch, etc.).

1. Enable AHCI in BIOS

2. Clean install of Windows 7 on to the SSD. If you have OEM you shouldn't need a new key, just ring MS and enter the code and they will provide an unlock key. If it is retail, you definitely don't need a new key.

3. Follow this guide. This allows you to identify whether TRIM is enabled and whether your firmware is up to date with the SATA drivers. It also allows you to move certain aspects of Windows over to another HDD to speed the SSD up.

I did those three instructions just 4 days ago when I received my SSD and I had no problems.

Good luck and enjoy!

I am looking at my BIOS and see no options for ACHI, and under my Hard Drive it only lets me acess the smart system. I also saw online that I need to switch a registry value to 0 first? Help please.

Also, my Win7 retail discs are the upgrade kind. Don't know if that is a big problem or not.
