i7 920 + 5870 crossfire

Thread Starter
Hello,

I've ordered another gigabyte 5870 off of Newegg today and I'm wondering if my CPU might be a limiting factor with crossfire.

If I'm going to crossfire 2 5870's , What would an ideal (i7) overclock be?

I can get it to 4.2 Ghz on air with my NH-D14 but want to know at what point do I Need the overclock for GFX. Would 3.33 be enough to make the most of 1600 speed Ram and crossfiring?

Looking for general discussion, any input is helpful

lol 4.0+ is plenty fine for what your asking. People worry about bottlenecks too much. tbh you dont need 4.0 to not "bottleneck". Just overclock to what you want and be happy. I would say anything over 3.5 is plenty cpu power. Its not until you have like 3 5870s that you should even be thinking about a cpu bottleneck.

I don't run my PC at 4.2 , that is just saying Its capable of that.

I'm wondering what is a good middle ground much like the 3.5 you suggested.

what's wrong with running at 4.2 24/7?
your cooler can definitely handle it...

3.8+ is good for two 5870's without a bottleneck.

It depends upon what games you run where the bottleneck lies. Most games are going to be CPU bottlenecked with the 5870 CF. However that is like complaining about 180 fps vs. 150 fps.

More is better but your CPU is going to handle the majority of games out there with ease.

i dont think you would bottleneck at stock speeds from what i know of i7s are beasts smile.gif

as the others are saying that cooler is up to the task for 4.00 4.20 24/7 uses

The only cf limiting factor is CF itself, the technology is not nearly mature enough, but it helps sell more cards, so it'll be pushed no matter what.

In some ways that is true. Some games see almost 100 percent scaling where as other games only see 40-50 percent scaling. That is one of the disadvantages of multi-GPU setups like CF and SLI.

This is why its better to CF/SLI higher end cards than two lower end cards. If CF/SLI slows down on higher end cards, you won't notice the performance drop in most games.

any i7 will be fine for your config, I have even seen a guy with dual GTX580 on a E8400 CPU and he said he was likely getting a bottleneck but NOTHING lagged in the games he was playing. I would say that in some instances you could notice a bit of a slow down if the game was more CPU dependent, but because most games now take advantage of multiple cores and GPU processing.. your golden. and I gather your talking about your sig rig.. 12gb ram, your really really really fine.
