GTX 280 Freezing

Thread Starter
I don't know what the problem is with the card. This has been happening for a while but it happens a few times only. It will freeze when I play games and I would have to restart the computer. The picture is COD Black Ops.
Here is my system:
Asus P5N-D
4x1 GB Corsair XMS2
EVGA 280GTX
Intel E6750 C2D
600W Ultra PSU
Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

Its called artifacting. It means that your card is about to die. If it is still within warranty, send it back. If not, there are ways to trouble shoot the problem or attempt to fix it.

could be:
  1. Overheating
  2. Bad Bios Flash
  3. Its dying
  4. Bad Overclock
  5. Low Voltages
  6. High Voltages
  7. Bad Drivers
There are a number of problems that could be contributing. Is everything stock? Cpu stable? Do you have the latest drivers?
If your are running stock and you're certain that its the GPU it might be RMA TIME

I would say 1, 3, 4 or 7. if you haven't cleaned out the heatsink in a while give it a try, if it's overclocked try it at stock & with some different drivers.
I've seen screens like that a couple times, usually before the card goes poof.

When you reboot the computer when this happens do you see any artifacts like that or is it all normal? Does it happen in windows?

Well I would have to shut down the computer because when I restart it, the comp won't show any picture. After about a minute or two i turn the computer back on and picture shows. Everything is stock clock, no overclocking. Not sure if its drivers but I recently used driver sweeper and cleaned everything and reinstalled the drivers from EVGA site. I don't think the card is overheating but right now on idle, the card is 60 degrees. I would guess the card is about to die. I hate doing RMAs though. This is like my 3rd time doing it already for this card, freaking annoying. It seems like the graphic dies the most out of everything in my computer.

If that's your 3rd RMA on that card I'd ask for a new replacement card because that is just ridiculous. Unless it's user error then that's a different story.

Artifacting does NOT mean your card is dying lol.

It is probably one of 2 things (seeing as this only happens in games right?)
1: Too much heat
-Solution-have you airblasted it lately?
-Solution 2-downclock card (particularly core voltage and memory clocks)

2: Overclock is too high (or natural problems are developing)
-Solution-downclock! Try at stock settings and see if it works.
-Solution-even if you havent overclocked, downclock
-Solution-If you have overclocked, it can be as simple as too little voltage-increase it or downclock.
-Solution-memory is the main source of artifacting.

I hope this helps! If you have any questions, please ask

Really.. It dosent mean that its dying? My brother had a Dell XPS with a Core 2 duo , 4 gb ram, 7900 GTX(never overclocked) . And the day his gpu died on him he was artifacting, and he couldnt have anything overclocked. So i dont think you should be saying artifacts dont mean that the card is dying.

hi!

I think what Rider85 says,is that artifacts aren't necesarily a symptom of a dying card, in other words, A dying card could artifact, but not means its dying just because is artifacting!
