The 6950 to 6970 unlock thread

Thread Starter
OK guys most of the other threads concerning unlocking attemps have been raided by arguments.

Lets keep this discussion solely about unlocking and the results of it.

Feel free to post benchies, screenshots or ask questions about unlocking.

Techpowerup article here

Grab ATI Winflash from here (32 & 64-bit).
Download HD 6970 BIOS. The Sapphire one I linked to will work on all reference design cards from any vendor.
Make sure the BIOS switch on the card is set to the 1 position (pictured further down if you don't know where it is).
Run ATI Winflash, click Save to save your BIOS, so you have a backup in case something goes wrong.
Load the HD 6970 BIOS into Winflash by clicking Load Image, followed by Program.
Let the flashing process complete and reboot your system.
Check the shader count using GPU-Z, it should show 1536. Make sure you use version 0.5.0 or newer, the official 0.4.9 version does not support HD 6900 Series properly. If you see a shader count of 1600, your GPU-Z version is outdated.
To ensure maximized performance open Catalyst Control Center, go to the Overdrive tab and set the PowerTune slider to the +20% setting. The "Testing" section of this article has more data on that.
Check stability in Windows desktop applications and games.

would this damage the card in any way? (bricking chance/degrading performance after a while etc.)

or probably not as long as you watch temps/don't play with volts etc...

Na, the card has a backup bios feature.

It's a dual bios so I don't think there is any worries about bricking it.

As for degrading performance only time will tell..

I am seriously considering one of these 6950s...These seem like killer cards.

I was in the same boat. I just went for a 6950 in the end. If it unlocks the awesome, if not, so be it. Still an upgrade smile.gif

I will post some before/after shots, however, they are estimating until the 6th for my card to get delivered (well any time between now and then).

I bought Sapphire. Loved my original Sapphire 5850, so hopefully they treat me good again. It wasn't the cheapest, Powercolour and XFX were £5-£10 less, but i'd rather go for a trusted brand biggrin.gif

I clearly remember scoring 18,500 with 6950 at stock clocks... and i also needed 930/1475 on 6950 to match the 6970 stock clocks benchmark:

Looks like it worked for this guy ^^ smile.gif
