Most all HD-6950's have at least some level of success rate at Un-Locking ... it's just that XFX cards are at the very bottom of the barrel on that list, and some of the worst cards overall.

In other words ... it MIGHT, there IS always some chance ... it's just not a very good chance, I'd put it at less than 20% for that card maybe even LESS, so I wouldn't recommend that card.
Better options from the site you linked would be THESE cards, as they also have the DUAL BIOS Switch on them ...

- MSI AMD Radeon HD 6950 Twin Frozr III PE/OC 2048MB GDDR5

- Asus AMD Radeon HD 6950 DirectCU II 2048MB GDDR5

- Sapphire AMD Radeon HD 6950 2048MB GDDR5

The BEST option would be either an Original Reference card IF you can still find one, or the Sapphire TOXIC Edition, also IF you can still find one, they were a limited release and I don't think we'll be seeing anymore of them.

Thanks for the advice. I was specifically looking at the XFX card due to it's low price allowing me to buy both cards at the same time. As the card has a very small chance of unclocking, would a overclock to the stock 6970 clocks be beneficial?

I hope that would give me the power needed to run battlefield 3 at ultra with settings such as MSAA turned off. I was looking at the 2GB version of this card but there's quite a large price difference and i'm not sure whether the extra vram is needed as i plan on staying at the 1080p resolution.

You're welcome ...

Yes now consider WHY these cards are so much cheaper ? wink.gif Frankly they aren't as good, and there's not much demand for them, as a result cheaper price to try a sell them to the unsuspecting. Also a SINGLE quality HD-6950 that UNLOCKS & OVERCLOCKS to HD-6970 performance levels or beyond can run BF3 @ ULTRA w/ MSAA OFF and get +60 FPS on 1080p ...

CrossFire-X results = http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/battlefield-3-graphics-performance,3063-11.html

... so if you plan to X-Fire you should be GOLD thumb.gif it's really only MSAA that gives AMD cards the fits, they can run FXAA (Fast Approximate Anti-Aliasing), just fine as the GREEN bars show.

Also Overclocking of a HD-6950 is a great way to get extra performance from the card ... and in fact some people will tell you to forget unlocking the shaders and just OC it ... well, NOT ME. I say DO BOTH ! get yourself a DECENT HD-6950 and DO BOTH IF YOU CAN ... why not get the benifits of unlocking AND overclocking ... and frankley most of the higher quality 6950's that will unlock, will also tend to overclock higher as well, so you really DO get what you pay for in this regard. Those 3 cards I suggested, would be great choices for you, and as the HD-7xxx series rolls out and nVidia reduces it's prices on the GTX-5xx series cards, I'm sure AMD will lower the prices on the 6xxx series cards as well ... maybe wait a bit and see what happens after Christmas or New Years if there are some sales ?   And lastly for the small difference in price between a 1GB 6950 and a 2GB 6950, you'd be foolish NOT to be buying the 2GB cards ! rolleyes.gif Here's another UK site to check some GPU's - http://www.scan.co.uk/shop/computer-hardware/all/gpu-amd/radeon-hd6950-pci-e-(1408-cores)

I guess it's just the prospect of having a crossfire setup that drew me to the XFX card, It still looks like a feasible option if i turn MSAA off and find a good price on the 2GB cards,. I'm aiming to get a new GPU as soon as possible, having to use a netbook at the moment and i'm starting to miss playing games on my PC. I'll have a look at the cards you mentioned. The 2GB of Vram on them would make them more futureproof.
