Dual Boot Woes :(

So I have two hard drive and I thought to myself; "Wouldn't it be nice to have on OS on one hard drive and one on the other?" With that in mind I set out just to do that, however I seem to be encountering a problem that stops this. At first I couldn't even get Linux distros to install since they for some reason didn't like Esata(something about no live image was the error and slackware only sees the SATA HDD) Now I got Kubuntu10.10 installed on the 80GB IDE drive I have and Win7 on the 500GB SATA. Why when I turn on the computer does the Linux drive not work? I change the order to set it as 1st and yet I end up with Grub showing up and even after choosing the kubuntu option it gives me this error about "gave up waiting for root device".

Did I miss something? Is it not possible to put your OSes on separate drives? Or is the IDE drive completely screwing everything up?

What eSata controller? That is prolly why Slack didn't see it especially if you didn;t use the huge starter kernel.

Grub2 can be funky with dual drives if you don't use the UUID option. Changing BIOS boot order fouls it up and can also fix it. Try with different order set.

There is no problem with multiple drives. I have an old box with 4 IDE drives and 6 systems on 3 of the drives. Just gotta keep proper order. When you installed whatever order you had then should work now.

Well, the windows HDD is fine. Boots windows and no grub.

I guess I didn't make it clear. Anyway, the eSATA was for the Bluray Drive that I'm using and both HDDs are inside the case, one IDE/PATA and the other SATA. When running esata to install only slackware made it but in cfdisk it only showed the SATA 500GB drive which I use for windows. When I used the USB instead then Kubuntu worked and I installed it on the 80GB IDE/PATA. But, on the immediately following reboot the drive wouldn't load an OS after grub selection was made.

So what is UUID?

Simple... You installed linux on an IDE drive, they don't get priority when being assigned a value. I'm guessing if you changed your grub options. This is my zen grub entry, some of it will be different from yours but I'm going to highlight the places you'll need to look into.

Code:
menuentry 'Arch GNU/Linux, with Linux vmlinuz26zen' --class arch --class gnu-linux --class gnu --class os --group group_main {
savedefault
insmod ext2
set root='(hd1,1)'
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 0c9a0aac-7956-4b03-bac2-e9e8c7f5802e
echo'Loading Linux vmlinuz26zen ...'
linux/vmlinuz26zen root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/b743fae3-73e7-4195-86e3-f467f57cad6f ro quiet vga=795 splash
echo'Loading initial ramdisk ...'
initrd/kernel26zen.img
}
One of the bold spots needs to be changed. You can do this in grub by pressing e over then entry, edit it, then ctrl^X.

[edit] Test this: reboot without the 500G, if it works you know it's your grub config.

So even though I set it as first in the BIOS Linux/Grub didn't understand that?

I'm going to try it without the 500 hooked up and see what happens.

UPDATE: No dice. Same error as before, something about /dev/disk/by-uuid/LONG LIST OF NUMBERS does not exist.

I take it that I'm screwed for using the 80GB HDD for Linux then. I hate dual booting the other way since space is going to be a premium but I guess I'll have to. Or is there a chance that I can install it without the 500 hooked up and then everything will be good?

You can also change things in the bios, I'll reboot and find my settings so I can describe it better. =P

It didn't matter what I changed it to even disconnecting the SATA drive didn't help let alone disabling it in the BIOS.

I'm going to try reinstalling with the SATA drive disconnected and maybe it will work this time. What do you think?

You could just try updating grub itself. If you got a live CD here is what you want to do, also your going to want only the 80G in... This might require some trickery once you get grub going but I'm pretty sure it shouldn't.

Boot the liveCD and type this in command:

sudo gparted

Find what the drive value is that you installed linux on, such as does it say /dev/sda or /dev/sdb, or something like that. You should reconise the drive from the partition layout.

Exit gparted once you have the drive "name" per se.

sudo rm boot/ -r
sudo mount /dev/sdX# /mnt (X being the drive letter, a/b/c... # being the root partition, you should pay attention to these when you install linux)
cd /
sudo ln -s /mnt/boot boot
sudo update-grub

reboot!

If that's not the case you can always install grub again... Idk how much that'd help though.

[edit] lol hold on I have to edit the commands, *** was I thinking

[edit2] I forgot you mount the drive to a temp folder then softlink to the boot folder. DUR all fixed

LOL. Whoops too late. Reinstalling the whole thing without the 500GB SATA hooked up. Hoping for the best. Since I didn't even get into the OS it's not like I was losing anything. Though, I know where to look if it does screw up. I just really don't want to have to.

EDIT: Screw it. It's not going to work and not worth the trouble. I guess I'm back to 2 OSes on one drive. These few weeks I've had for winter break have put me back on the unhappy side with Linux right now. Seems like every time I figure out one problem and fix it another one pops up. Oh well. The wack-a-mole continues.
