Dual Boot Woes :( - Page 3

To be honest the side port is some weird thing I can't really make sense of. The board supposedly has 128MB dedicated without RAM for that but I have no idea where they hide it. The RAM thing still has me perplexed and I'm actually starting to consider it the problem (hoping since the board was the third most expensive part in this build and if it's bad I'm refunding not RMAing). I'm going to try memtesting with Kubuntu and maybe windows; you think that's OK?

OCing the AMDs has changed a lot even from when I had mine 2 or three years ago. I don't know if that's for the HT since AMD and every AMD user says/shows that with the HT beyond 2000 you're losing performance do to a clock syncing error. That 2600 sounds like the NB frequency wall which probably explains why going above it prevented windows from even booting.

I haven't run any of my programs with or without OC that I know it would make a difference besides a few games.

I know so little about BIOS (why do manuals only explain/list the ones you know but not the ones you don't?) options but this board has nothing that seems even close to force detection. I have noticed that the board seems to read and verify the SMART options on both drives but I may be wrong. It seems like it is Auto detecting them every time the system starts but it's still 30seconds before that happens. What I'm talking about is that the system starts tests the RAM 4095OK (4096 installed) while showing about three keyboard combinations that can do various things BBS, ACC, Setup and then after 30seconds the HDDs are both spun up and it goes to boot from the first drive set in the BIOS(since I haven't installed Linux it's the SATA one right now).

As for installing on another system I can't get the old Dell that it came from to work with any disk drives whether the one it came with or my BDR through USB. And since MeeGo took over my only bootable flash drive I can't try another distro unless you know how to clear a corrupt but still functioning flash drive (MeeGo can be installed from the stick but it can't be erased now).

In BIOS setup first page at Primary Master try setting "Type" first away and then back to "Auto". Sorry I was unclear. It won't actually say "Force Detect:. You may have to hit Enter but the manual seems to say it, as always before, will detect on the spot. That way you can see how long any drive takes, If it takes longer than a few seconds something is wrong See if that works.

Well, I'm never going to live this down but...

You know how PSU's come with 8Pin power connectors for the CPU? I made an a$$ out of myself because I just assumed that the two 4pins where interchangeable. So, about an hour ago I decided that there probably wasn't anything wrong with the part but just me and went looking around noticed the CPU power connectors and decided to swap them. Next power on I missed the POST because it finished in 3seconds.

Going to try defaults for the system and see if that fixes the still continuing Linux install problems. I also removed the jumper from the IDE since I'm pretty sure it only needed the jumper when another IDE was connected. Should I force it to detect still anyway?

Seems like installing any OS other than Windows through ESATA is not an option. Going to try the disk drive with USB instead.

I passed on run of memtest86 v4.1 through Kubuntu's disc. Does that mean anything?
I'm still holding out hope that I can get this computer setup the way I want with windows on the 500 and Linux (not sure what distro(s)) on the 80.

Unless the label shows that Master and Single are different, I'd assume Master was correct. Verify with detect in BIOS.

The eSATA should work. I have a repair box I take on service calls that is a small powered enclosure for two SATA drives (fan cooled, too). I have a 500GB Hard drive and a Plextor SATA DVD burner. I keep a PCI and a PCIe SATA controller card in my kit. I have Slackware 12.2 on the hard drive and an array of Live CDs. I can boot any of them on any system and do backups, repairs, and data recovery. I have used it on stuff all the way from P133's to Quad cores. You might need to look in those BIOS drive menus to see what can be tweaked. Obviously check to see that boot order recognizes all drives. BTW Slackware comes with an app in Extra called Smart Boot Loader which detects and offers a boot menu for all drives including opticals.

It can be installed on any Linux including Slax LiveCD. Here's the "skinny" http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/Smart_Boot_Manager

and Download

Not 100% certain but I think something might be wrong with the ESATA connection between the board and the case my BDRE is in. I can't get anything but windows to install through ESATA. The good news is that I got the setup I want with Kubuntu now working perfectly on the 80GB IDE. I did have to put everything but my RAM settings back to defaults to do this. The drives seem to be recognized fine; just what ever HDD I set as 1st becomes the only HDD in the boot order. As of right now I'm thinking that I probably will not be able to OC with this board, and considering the $80 I dropped on it I'm a bit upset since I had a crappy 40-50 ECS G31 that faired better at OCing with less options than this thing has. The only other part that I can blame is the PSU and I'm sure if I did the PSU guys would murder me for such blasphemy.

So in short since I got Kubuntu installed and I only have a few days before my break ends I'm probably not going to work on another distro for a while. I'm pissed about that since I followed your recommendation and got a ethernet WIFI adapter that works perfectly so I was hoping to try Slackware or Arch. I haven't actually had much time to just sit back and enjoy relaxing so I'm going to do that.

The really funny thing is that I don't feel a need to OC because with Linux my system is crazy fast. I even made 600KB/s download speeds with linux compared to 300KB/s in windows. Obviously, windows shall be on the back burner for me.

If your mobo actually has a separate controller chipset for eSATA it is possible that some kernels don't have support enabled, or if old enough, have it at all. All hardware support is in the kernel, not the distro. It's just that so few new users choose to even check if the module is available in their kernel. So many people, even professionals, complained about XP's having to use a floppy (which few people even have anymore) to install drive controller drivers if you were fast enough to hit, what was it?, F6? that with 7 they made damned sure they supported everything. That's convenient for sure but you have experienced the cost - a huge unwieldy and slooow kernel that cannot be pared down by the user. To accommodate easy Home Networking Workgroups the TCP/IP stack suffers. TANSTAAFL!

I know what you mean about overclocking. I am still addicted to it even though the returns are less and less every year. These days people think they're doing great if they spend $200-$300 on coolers to get a 20% overclock. I recall spending less than $30 to get a 50% overclock. Despite that I have an old really thick mirror that I keep solely as a truly flat surface to lap and polish CPU and heatsinks to a mirror finish for max heat transfer. It's just fun and rewarding somehow even though I sometimes think if I put all the dollars and man.hours together I spent on OCing I could buy an awesome rig. But then I realize that I'd only overclock it!

Well, I think I've learned enough to know the kernel is the determining factor except when the distro is either behind or modifies the kernel. Am I right in that?

I spent 30 on this cooler and have to say I like it even though I'm not OCing. Thing is pretty silent and my idle to full p95 load range is about 15-20C from one to the other (part of me realizes that with how hot my place gets in the summer this cooler is going to be a godsend). I forget how many people on here just buy the newest thing and live under money trees though. @99 and probably 2 years of life this CPU I felt was a steal. Maybe if I see a Thuban or Deneb for 100-150 I'd jump onto that but outside of Crysis(lol) this system has crushed the games I play.

So thank you for bearing with me on this and helping. Now that I have both OSes setup the way I want I will wait for help before I OC.

That's pretty much it. However some distros patches are so small you can get away with just a "make oldconfig&&make prepare" at least for awhile. Other's like the Debuan based ones and especially the *Buntus and derivatives are too heavily patched to run well without applying patches or just waiting for a new release. Slackware has a huge advantage here IMHO. I have an older box still running Slackware v10.2 but it has a 2.6.36 vanilla kernel on it customized only by turning some features on and a whole lot of em off. It's fast and could be updated just by kernel for years to come to support new hardware and deeper tweak features.

Crysis is just written poorly. The humiliator for me was always 3DMark because it is so cutting edge and I'm just not that rich to buy the very best every 3 or 4 years. I buy the best when the prices fall. My FX-57 started out as a $1200 CPU and I got it for $229 new, in a retail box. If you are running cool and silent, you did good.

No problem. You're welcome. It has improved and that's worthwhile.
