I picked one up at Fry's for $29 cool.gif Works great.

It's not an issue of heat. Ive had it since May and i haven't hadn't any issues up until about 2-3 weeks ago. The air coming out is cold/cool. There was a bios patch that was suppose to fix the fan issue but it didn't help.

Ive played BFBC2 on all high settings max resolution for hours with out a hiccup. This is not the issue i'm running into. I have placed spacers under the laptop's feet to lift it an additional 1/2 inch to test this idea in the past and as far as temps it made no difference, the design of the cooler in these things is exceptional.

Yes the fans kick on when you first start the laptop, but they normally spin back down. now they seem stuck at 100% even if i put the laptop into power saver mode, and leave it idle.

Thanks Keep the ideas coming.

Again have you checked the temps, other than feeling the air coming out of the laptop? If your GPU is overheating because the heatsynch has detached it's self the fans will run at full bore, but only minimal cooling will be achieved. Thus explaining why only cool air is being dispelled.

I have to agree with Unacceptable, your fans will run full speed in an attempt to cool your GPU or CPU and because the HS is not connected very well to the chip, the air coming out the back will be cool rather than warm. I also have this laptop and even when it is idling the air is warm coming out the back (not hot, as I agree that the cooling system is first rate). I have seen the same issue with a couple of older toshiba's and Dell laptops that resulted in the replacement of the failed (overheated) GPU, checking the TIM would have saved alot of money (one laptop was replaced completely the other got a new GPU installed).

yes, take the thing apart and check for heat sink contact. Also maybe a wire or sensor for the fan or somthing has became loose.

Well after running out of ideas I gave up... and brought it to BESTBUY under warranty. The sent it out, my prediction was. The motherboard or video went bad. Leaning tears the first one. After a week I took a ride over to BESTBUY and harassed the poor guy. Behing the counter in the black shirt.(I have little respect for these "geek squad " guys. He looks it up in his fancy computer that it needed a part replaced and its back odered. I make the guy show me his screen and it calls the part "motherboard riser ", so at that point I point to the part description and say looks like the motherboard. He then tells me that that is ageneric code used for anything in the vicinity on the motherboard. At this point I laughed and said its 2" thick everything is in the vicinity of the motherboard. According to him it could mean : motherboard, cpu, cpu, WiFi, RAM, fan, heatsink, harddrive (I knew it wasn't that b/c I took them out b4 i give it to best buy), lcd, kb, touchpad, battery.

To say the least I left more frustrated then when I went in. That was last friday. Backordered remember, and they don't know what part or how long. Monday was King day. Wednesday I received aautomated phone call @ around 3pm telling me my laptop is fixed and back at the Store come pick it up. At 4pm I finally get a minuter to call. Hey have no idea that my laptop have been received or not at best buy they still had to search through the warehouse to see if it had even been received and then they still wanted to verify that it was fixed.

Mind you I had already been called and told it was ready to be picked up. About an hour later I received a phone call from bestbuy telling me that found it. But they would have to send back because it would not boot. apparently they never read the notes in their system staying I pulled the hard drives prior to giving it over to best buy.

Once I got there they informed me that the motherboard had gone. No details about what specifically went.

It seems fine now. But this will be a lesson to me next time buy off the egg or amazon and don't deal with incipient BESTBUY.

I have the G73JH as well. It was shutting down about 1-2 min after starting, after having been stable for 10 months. Once the trouble began, it did this every time it was started.

Mine also has the Intel 160GB SSD. It also has an upgraded screen (LG) 1920X1080 and 4GB of RAM added for a total of 10GB.

I removed the bottom plate and attached a 6 inch fan blowing on the motherboard and heatsinks. The system ran well with the fan attached every time I ran it. On the day I took it in, it ran for 4 hours while I backed it up over the USB port to an old hard drive (disk image backups). Without the fan it shut down abruptly after a minute or two. If I tried an immediate restart, the computer would not start. If I waited 5 min or so I could restart it but it would shut down after a minute or two. I figured it was overheating. I disassembled it down to the motherboard and checked the fans to see they were spinning freely, they were. I applied 3V from a lithium cell to the fans and confirmed they both run. This was about as far as I was able to go with it so I reassembled it and returned it to Best Buy for warranty work. It went back to Best Buy on 2/7, the Geeksquad warranty repair service. I got it back about 2h ago (2/17). Total time at BB was 11 days.

The technicians note says the system instability was due to the 4GB memory module (Kingston DDR3 PC8500 4GB) not matching the original three 2GB Kingston 10600 memory modules. (The PC8500 is the memory module recommended for this computer). The computer now works. It hasn't shut down again. The offending 4GB memory module is still installed.

I'm a bit skeptical of his diagnosis, in my experience memory problems result in BSODs not sudden shutdowns. Also being able to overcome the shutdowns with the additional air blowing on the motherboard still leads me to believe the problem is overheating rather than a memory problem although the extra air flow would cool the memory as well. The fact that it is running now with the same memory also makes me skeptical. Still the computer works now and it didn't when I took it in so something they did fixed it. I just don't know what. Despite skepticism, I have no choice other than to accept what they've said. I don't understand it but I accept it.

If anyone else can shed light on this, by all means chime in.

Regards to all,

David

I David, I would be willing to bet that the Geeks squad (really, people who are not good enough to get a good paying corporate job) cleaned out the air pathways as a matter of course and this allowed a good flow of air to the CPU/GPU. Just a guess but I do know that this is common with many systems as they suck in alot of dust and it builds up over time.

That's a good thought. While I had it apart, though, I did blow out the fans and the heat sinks. There wasn't much dust in there. There was a bit but not really much at all. The problem remained after reassembly.

BTW, the Geeksquad treated me well. I see they take a lot of bashing here but my experience with them has been very good.

I am not saying that they are not nice people, I just have doubts about their ability to accuratly diagnose problems without formating and reinstalling. The blockage might have been in near the inlets not the fans themselves. But again I am just guessing.
