Need a graphics card?

Thread Starter
Hey guys I'm new to these forums and my bros mobo and psu burned out so I gave him my old comp and I bought

Phenom II x4 945 3.0 ghz
Antec Earthwatts 430w
GIGABYTE GA-MA785GM-US2H with Radeon HD 4200 integrated
2 GB RAM DDR2

I am wonder whether to get more RAM or a graphics card? I want a decent one that runs many new games at 1280x1080x32 at max with some room for future games. The thing is, my power supply is a little low, and my budget is about $120 (probably could go over a bit if I'd get more bang for the buck) I was thinking of getting an HD Radeon 5770.

If I'm not supposed to post here sorry because I'm new, but I think I'm following the rules correctly.

Thanks in advanced.

If you can afford the 5770, then I say go for it without hesitation because it will be quite superior to the onboard video. Plus, the 430W Antec Earthwatts is still going to handle this system quite easily with a single 5770 in it.

I love my 5770. Plays SC2 on max settings. In fact I'm picking up another this weekend for $100 (used reference model) I would get a new power supply if you do any overclocking. I don't know about the quality of yours' but if its of good quality, you should be fine.

Thanks! I think it would be able to play at 1280x1080 on high, but will it handle it for future games? My monitor is 19 inches and max is 1280x1080 and I'm not planning on getting a new monitor anytime soon.

It depends on what games you get. The 5770 is not that powerful of a card, but it's certainly superior to the onboard 4200 you have. Plus, it's the best you can do right now without replacing the power supply.

OK. I play year-old games so I think it'll be fine. One more question, would you suggest a GTX 450 over the 5770?

I don't know how the GTS 450 compares to the 5770.

That's exactly what I'm running. Just 2x 19" 1280x1024 monitors. I stand corrected on needing a new power supply. Yours' will be plenty fine.
