Blizzard employee needs a build for home. Help please. - Page 4

You don't need SLi, but she does need as much GPU horsepower as possible. Rendering sucks that up like nothing else. A friend of mine used to work in movie effects rendering, and his company used to buy new machines for every movie, and bin them at the end, dead or dying. 24/7 flat out rendering for months on end will push thermal limits the whole time, plus kill fans and hard-drives.

Skip the gamer cards, get as big a quadro card as you can fit, if you need extra displays, then add in some GTS450s to run those. Power it all with a big Antec TPQ or Signature power supply (or the Seasonic X series/Corsair AX) and you're good.

Hard-drives: Buy good ones for your data, and buy a small pile of cheap ones that you can assign as the place for temporary files to go when rendering. Put those cheap ones in a nice removable caddy, because if she does a lot of work, those cheap drives will die, a LOT from being thrashed to death.

Also, buy her a NAS (network attached storage) for backups of her important data, or at the very least, a USB portable drive.

Edit: fit some extra fans in the case, gentle typhoons are recommended, especially the fast 1850rpm ones, for pushing lots of air quietly.

She said it's going to be more or less 80% gaming 20% animation. Knowing that, I'll just get her 1 580 and ask her to to see if the wait times are unacceptable for as much as she's going to be using it for work. If that's the case, we'll just return it for a Quadro, and get her a 460 or something for gaming.

Now that it's only getting 1 card, we have more room to spare on things like 1600 domi's and Antec SG 850 and such. Now to find a good deal on a SSD!

BTW, thanks for the suggestion of the throw away HDDs that'll get thrashed. That's a really good idea from the sounds of it. So it'll be SSD --> throw away HDDs --> storage HDDs.

If its coming out of her own paycheck then there is really no need for a workstation card, you would get far greater performance from a large SSD then blowing more then half your budget on a workstation card.

A single 580 would do fine for gaming and graphic work, along with an i7 which will provide plenty of power for processing anything she will need to do for work. Couple it with 6 or 12gb's of triple channel ram and your set.

Personally I think if she needs to buy a 1000+$ workstation card then blizzard should purchase one for her, otherwise don't put yourself out for a company that isn't willing to give you the proper equipment for your work. A 580 will cut it just fine for something coming out of your own pocket.
