Odd white coloration on photos? Is it lens flare?

Is this because the sun was shining in the lens? It happened on several other photos but not on some even though they were shot at the same angle? Could there be a problem with my lens? Thanks for any help.

It could be lens flare... The light might be reflecting off of the snow in a way that is visible in the photo. Are you using any filters?

Flare.

Definitely flare (mostly obvious by the loss of contrast).

Don't use cheap filters, use a lens hood if you have it, and perhaps clean your lens if there's a lot of grease on it.

Thanks guys. I'm not using any filters and I don't have a hood either.

If using a DSLR, I highly recommend a filter for lens protection.

Did you use flash in that shot? Because it seems like the snow reflected the light and made a flare. Or it was just a really sunny day.

Yep. its always easier to replace a $5 clear filter instead of a $500-$1500 lens. If you want a quick and cheap (cheap as in not well made, as well as inexpensive) way to fix it, use thick paper like cardstock or matboard and make a 'home made' lens hood until you can get one.

It has been said hundreds of times that a filter to protect your lens is a bad idea. Google it if you want to read all of the POTN threads.
