I'm at 4.0ghz, what next with my i7-950? - Page 2

Well, from experience, you'll need much more voltage to HT on and you will see a jump with 4.2 HT Off as well.

For example, i was runing mine @ 4.0Ghz, 1.20vcore and now, at 4.2, i need 1.264vcore.

So, next steps for you, imo, are, lower you pll to 1.6-1.7, find your lowest qpi voltage.
After you find the minium requirements for the stable 4.0Ghz, just make up your mind if you want HT on or off.

If off, just start doing testing at 4.2, 4.3, 4.4 & 4.5 just for fun If on just, get your 4.0Ghz stable with ht on and then go for more.

Should I turn on the XMP profile? I've enabled HT and am currently running Prime it's been 3 hours so far and still going. Did I get the golden CPU or is this board just rock solid?? I've only bumped the voltages once to reach 4.0 with HT on and it's maxed out at 61 Celsius. I don't know why CPUID says core is at 1.2v its actually set at 1.28v

You don't need XMP on. As for your CPU, it's not exactly difficult to hit 4.0 with HT on air, especially with your cooler. Most people can at least get 4.2.

DO NOT USE PRIME 95 its garbage

i have never once gotten my temps high using this app running any configuration.

Use LINX

THis is one hell of a little bugger and it will let you know if your OC is stable or not. running LINX for even an hour or so proves that it is a stable OC. whats running it at 24 hours or 2 have to do with anything other than wasted electricity on your bill. after 2 hours, if your system is running stable and the temp has not risen then you are good. if you get the gradual increase of 1degree then you should probably lower the voltage of your cpu vcore a little more im running 4.0 on air I7920 and it never goes above 78c under max load on Linx. even when i run some HD video encoding. Ive overclocked well over a hundred boxes and i do the same tests on all of them and not one has ever over heated. so 24 hours is way overkill. if your config is off then Linx will lock your system up quickly within 15min. so why wait for 2 hours, been running my I7 box since i created this account... see profile for setup, and ive never had heating issues. and i run 8 threads on 4 cores, Win7 64 ult... set the priority to real time in task mgr and run that *****. Just make sure you have a good read on temps as most application based temp programs will lag and not show current data while running these tests. If you have a multi meter break it out and stick the temp probe under the proc to get an accurate reading while the system is under massive load. this will give you an external source for your temps.

I've run stability tests with it (IBT another flavor of Linx)... and it doesn't necessarily prove your stable after an hour or two... my processor/memory miscalculated way pass the two hour mark...

8-12 hours of p95 or 50+ runs of LinX or IBT, either are good but the latter will take less time.

You will definitely see higher temps with IBT or LinX than p95.

So you are getting max of 61c with 4.0 HT on, damn that's sweet. What is your ambient temp?

Ambient was around 69 Fahrenheit. I've been running different stress tests all day and have been tweaking things. I turned on HT. I had LINX going, and then opened up Furmark at the same time and maxed that out as much as a could to stress the GPU as well. I had them both running for an hour and a half while I went out for lunch with a friend. Got home and it was still going strong. It hit 63 degrees while I was gone. This thing is a beast! Loving this new build so far. I think i'm going to try a push to 4.2ghz...
