HTPC (movies/music & some occassional gaming)

Alright, I went with wired, thanks guys.

Different question though:

I have an a/v receiver, how can I pass my tv signal through it to my tv? if that's even possible. There is a connector on the back and it says "Antenna" but I think that's only for radio, no? I tried and it didn't work.

Basically what I'm trying to do is:

TV signal->a/v receiver->tv
and my htpc would also go to my a/v receiver so that i could switch between htpc and tv via my a/v receiver. is that possible? Or would I need to buy a tv tuner for my htpc and connect it to that?

Thanks guys!
Hi,

So I bought myself a 40" TV yesterday and now I'm thinking of putting together an HTPC. It's primary function would be, of course, to play movies but also some music. But I figured i may as well throw in a 5770 (vapor x) and a tri or quad core (athlon II) so that I can play some games that are not all that demanding (e.g. FIFA 11, NBA 2K11 etc).

I really don't care whether it's ATX or mATX, but I'm limited to 17cm (6.69") in height due to my wall unit. I would need all components except for a video card, I have a low end nvidia card somewhere that I use as back up and I would get a 5770 later on. I also have a mid range sound card that I would use until I get a 5770 for vid+audio.

Soo...I need a mainboard, ram, cpu (perhaps aftermarket cooler? I was thinking of the big shuriken by scythe but I really don't know how that would affect the available space for ram), HD, case, PSU, and blu ray drive (just the drive, don't need a burner). i looked at some drives but couldn't decide since I wasn't entirely sure how much the drive speed affects the playback itself, so hopefully someone can shed some light on it for me.

Personally, I'd prefer to go with AMD but I wouldn't mind giving Intel a try if I got equal performance for a better price. Although that is very unlikely

The components I was looking at:
CPU: AMD Athlon X3 445 http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...-872-_-Product
HD: Caviar Green 1.5 TB
Case: I was hoping to get this one: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16811163117 but unfortunately it's a bit too big so perhaps something similar.
Cooler (maybe): Big shuriken http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...big%20shuriken
The rest I'm unsure of. The only thing I really care for on the mainboard are a lot of USB ports since I would hook up a few things (minimum 4). Budget is up to $500, can be a bit more, but I would most certainly not mind if it was less than that lol

While we're at it, could I create a network between my sig rig and my HTPC and stream videos over WiFi to my HTPC and watch in my living room? It's just one wall and maybe 6', not sure how good the quality would be though so maybe someone tried it out and can let me know how that went (it would be 1080p movies).

And lastly, if I got a tv tuner card, can I pick up channels for free? Would I need anything else to watch TV besides the card itself (like cable/sat..)? I feel like a noob asking that question. lol I guess I would need to get some sort of antenna, but I live in an apartment so an indoor antenna would be the best I could do i think.

Thanks a lot people

The wifi should be good enough. I stream 1080p HD from my computer->router->~15ft + a wall-> my wireless G laptop just fine. Which means that wireless N should be even better. I'm pretty sure quality isn't affected by wifi.. it's more a question of does it play/stutter or not.

Wireless is not reliable enough for 1080p. If you have some full speed dual band N you may get it working. The guy above me must be real lucky or have some real low quality 1080p videos. youtube?

It is highly recommended to go wired.

^^ Seconded, or at least Wireless N, G isn't fast enough for streaming real 1080p (blu ray) files, it is for like youtube, especially if you can buffer, but not media streaming.

I have a media server and my laptop only has wireless G and I cannot stream 1080p movies with it unless im on the 100mbit wired.

If your signal for some reason always 100% Wireless G can stream 1080p with no issues but that is a very slim chance. Go wired and if you cannot get wired going get the power line network running.

Just save yourself the hassle and stay away from wireless.

Wired all the way!!
