Slow HDD speed?

Thread Starter
Hi, I have a Samsung HD103SJ as my main drive with Windows 7 Home x64 installed.

I know it's not that accurate, but the Windows Experience Index rates my disk drive at a 5.9. I also find it to be rather slow at times too, like when flipping through images, or booting up. I downloaded HDTune (trial) but I don't know what tests to run or what I should compare my results to.

Any input appreciated! =3

That is about good of a index score as you will get on those drives. Only thing that will yield a higher score will be a ssd or some 10k's in raid. You could check your drivers for the chipset and that should help. A fragmented drive will read and write slow also. Here is the link to check your chipset drivers to see if they are up-to-date.

On the hdtune just hit start when you launch the app as that is all you need to do. As even with my f3's in raid i still got 5.9. My ssd made it shoot up a little bit. But honestly that windows index score means nothing.

I was considering getting an SSD, but...

As the test is running right now, I can get anywhere from 4-130 MB/s reads. Does that seem about right? It looks like a pretty big gap between the two.

Here is my results so you can compare yours. Hopefully this will help you out on it.

2x F3's in raid-0

Single f3 with 237gig used
* Note this is not a os drive and is just used for storage.

Single F3 OS with 293gig used
* Just broke up the raid and need to reinstall chipset drivers and defrag.

Crystalmark main os drive
* Just broke up the raid and need to reinstall chipset drivers and defrag.

Here is another test i like to use and it is easy to use.
CrystalMark

Untick short stroke
turn off any unneeded background processes
They seem to be using your HDD during the benchmark causing spikes

How much storage have you used on the drive. And when was the last time it was defragged? As that minimum 2.9MB looks pretty low there. And uncheck the short-stroke setting. Durdle beat me to it.

Alright. I've used about 1/3 of it, and I defragged it a few months ago... Probably about time to hit it again...
