is it bad to mix ram?

Thread Starter
I have 1066 ddr2 reapers and I just got a h50 so I finally have room to get more ram. If I can find ram with the same manufacturer settings is it ok to mix ram? I am not sure they make my sticks anymore thats why I am asking.

mixing RAM brands and even speeds isnt a huge deal. as long as its all DDR2, just set the correct timings/speed in the BIOS and the RAM will run at whatever you set it to.

i have corsair 800mhz and gskill 1066mhz in my computer, all running at 900mhz and with voltages and timings appropriate to the lower clocked ram.

yes you can mix ram,but it's not recommended.search around, you may find some one that is selling the same ram u have or you can sell the ram u have and buy newer ram.

exactly. They will all just clock to the slowest stick. This means, even if some ram overclocks better, the will all be limited. In the end, it will not matter, it is just one of those things that is a pet peeve of a lot of people.

as a second thought... OP, you have 4gb of ram, there is no practical need for more. there arent games or applications that will use all 4gb of your memory. your money could be better spent in other areas that will give you a tangible difference

this is exactly what is happening to me... the Gskill ram i have is 1066mhz and runs beautifully. the corsair sticks are 800mhz and i cant OC my E8400 any more because the corsair sticks arent stable if i push them any further. GRRRRRRRRRR!!! i finally get an awesome CPU and my RAM is killing me.

its more a want than a need. I know 8gb is overkill but if I can find some cheap sticks used on ocn why not right?

Mixing is fine, but you will be limited by the slowest stick you have in there. Add in the fact that the AMD memory controller sucks more power running 4 sticks than it does 2, and you will find yourself needing more cpu volts to run the same clocks as you do with 2 sticks.
