I want to start folding.

See my sig rig. How do I go about it, and will there be any performance impact with my CPU while I am using the computer?

Kind of a noob to this

Your i7 is great for folding.

To start, you will run a normal smp client. Once you have 10 WUs done, you can move on to -bigadv WUs which are much larger but will produce many more points because of time bonuses.

So, to start follow this guide. Make sure you get a passkey, because that is what will track how many WUs you have finished.

Once you hit your tenth. You will add the -bigadv flag and you can begin getting a lot more PPD (points per day). However, these clients take a day or two to finish. When running bigadv clients, there is a deadline in which the WU (work unit) must be completed by, if you do a lot of gaming, you man not want to fold with a -bigadv client because you may not finish the WU in time. (more on gaming later)

If you decide to fold with your gpu as well, ATI cards require one thread be dedicated to them. This means adding a smp -7 flag to your cpu client. This flags makes the client only use 7 threads. Then you will use this guide to set the affinity for each client.

This is a lot of information that probably won't make sense, but if you follow the guides, it will all come together in the end.

As far as using your computer while folding; small things like web-browsing have a small affect. However, gaming will have a larger impact. It is suggested you pause your gpu client while folding. Your cpu client on the other hand will throttle itself giving the game priority over the resources.

I have the same GPU as you and I get about 3k-4k PPD on my card

Alright I have the SMP client set up. Also is there anyway to make the GPU client throttle itself? And what should I expect as far as PPD for my CPU and GPU?

what is your cpu overclock?

there is a chance you are better off not folding on the gpu because it holds the cpu back.

an i7 gets 26k -32k when running a big adv
16-24 with a regular smp client

In order to finish a bigadv WU before the deadline, you really need to be at 3.8 or above.

Plus fold 24/7 to finish a bigadv

I run day to day at 3.4 because I mostly just game. I have a profile of it stable at 3.7 though.

If I have my computer open for use 12 hours a day at 3.7 would that be enough?

unfortunately not for a bigadv client. The speeds might be fine, but you need to to put more time into it for bigadv. However, that will still be great for a regular smp client.

Alright, also how much do bonuses help once I am past 10 WU's? As of now it says I am only getting 5055.7 PPD

are you using HFM to monitor?
have you let it run a few frames (%)?
how is your cpu usage in the task manager?
