Thermal paste on HD 5850

Update:
If I were to replace TIM, would I need new pads for memory and VRM's?

When I got my card in May, I instantly started tweaking and playing around with settings. I noticed that the three temp sensors in the core weren't giving the same temps. 1 was always 10C below the rest. Oh well, I thought, I'll just make sure my fan kicks in 10C earlier. Problem solved and I had fun with the card until now. I've noticed that temp sensor 2 is now ~3C higher than sensor 3 which is now 12C over temp sensor 1.

Is this a thermal paste problem or what?


Also for some reason GPU-Z's temp graphs show my VRM temps go down when they are in fact going up... Weird confused.gif

It def woudn't hurt to put your own TIM on. the stuff from the factory is gabage, plus they goop it on waaaay too much.

I've heard that some of them can fall apart. I'm afraid that I'll need to much force to separate cooler and GPU and end up breaking something. Remember that this is a card that's been run OC'ed by me for more than half a year and I bought it used. It's pretty old and I'm worried the thermal pads are bad like the paste redface.gif

Not if you're careful.

Two major types of TIM pads. The better ones are sort of rubbery --at least, they're better for holding up when you take apart a card. Most of the higher-end Radeons I've seen use these.

Some vendors have used TIM pads that are more like spray-foam. Whether they provide worse/better thermal interface, I don't know, but I think of them as worse, because if you're not careful, they can tear.

Just be very gentle when taking things apart, and you should be okay. The hardest part is separating the GPU from its cooler due to the TIM grease that sticks it together. I use a small flathead precision screwdriver to provide gentle leverage and slowly pry the `sink off the card.

Not between the GPU. For example:

Disclaimer --I'm not responsible for any screwups here.

Place the card on a flat surface, heatsink side up. Slide the screwdriver in between the `sink and the card until the tip almost touches the metal that surrounds the GPU die. I make sure to do so in a way where I'm not levering the screwdriver against the GPU, any resistors, caps, etc, just a flat portion of the card's surface (use a small flashlight if you need to to make sure). Make absolutely sure all of your retaining screws that hold the card's heatsink on have been removed at this point, or you can pry all you want and you'll accomplish nothing and possibly wreck the card.

Gently wiggle the screwdriver, using it to lever the heatsink off the card slowly. Here's the type of driver I generally use (one with a flat head, not too narrow)

It helps to hold the card on the table as you lever it, so you're providing opposing force against the screwdriver.
