I don't see why you don't just buy a bigger SSD and use ONE drive instead of buying a second for RAID. If you're going to buy an additional drive, you might as well not use the 40GB anymore.

I would recommend, perhaps an nlited version of windows 7 in order to limit the space it uses. I urrently have about 35GB remaining on my 60GB SSD, with my OS, Browser, Office Suite, and the GIMP installed. I nlited my installation to get it down to about 9GB installed.

Not a surprise 40Gb wasn't enough. I bought one myself, but haven't installed it due to realizing its too small. My base image with no games is almost 60GB with the regular programs I use. I personally would just buy a bigger ssd and sell the 40GB since you lose trim support if you go Raid 0. Use something like acronis true image to clone the drive to the new bigger drive.

On another not a newer sandforce drive will likely outperform to X-25V drives in Raid 0 anyway

You can raid 2 different sized drives.

If you raid 0 a 250 gb and a 500gb
You would get a capacity of 500gb

It takes the smallest drives and and multiples the size of how many drives are in the system

For example

N = number of drives S= smallest drive
its N x S = X

I have 5 hard drives
3 of them are 500 GB
2 of them are 250 GB
I want to put them in raid 0
The outcome would be

5 X 250gb
You will still get the increase Read / Write Speeds from having multiple drives.

Max sata transfer is as follows
Sata 1.5g= 150mb/s
Sata 3g = 300mb/s
sata 6g = 600mb/s

thanks everyone for their insights, I think I will just buy a larger SSD and abandon the use of the 40GB as a boot drive. This way I dont need to buy any additional hardware, other than a better MOBO. Let the shopping begin.

with win7, office and a few other bits? I have win7, nero9, pwr dvd 9, ms office 2010 (the whole lot), various video ed software, pci graphic software, sound card software, serif page plus x3, all sorts of other programs and only using 27gb of vertex2 60gb......

have u disabled hibernation? I read somewhere while driving myself nuts re these damn ssd's that takes twice I think it was of your installed ram...maybe wrong though

Wow... I would put Windows and frequently used applications (note--not games) on the SSD. All other stuff I'd put on your HDD.

Wouldn't bother with a RAID0 array with SSD's unless you have a good, very fast, dedicated controller. And even then, it'll hardly be worth it. Because...:

It still escapes me why people put games on their SSD's and RAID0 arrays. Neither have any noticeable impact on game load times. Game load time is inevitably due to CPU speed because all of the game files are stored in a compressed format on the HD--the reason why games take a while to load is not disk speed, but rather because the CPU needs to decompress all of the files. Reading them takes hardly any time.

And in RAID you lose TRIM support (afaik).

Abandon the 40GB one? Why not use it exclusively for Windows and nothing else? If you get a second, separate SSD, this will give you the most optimal system performance.

After reading your post I checked my drives with SpaceSniffer. And found 10Gb of restore system data(system volume information). also will remove page file 4gb. I have a lot of space, but don`t like garbage. you have nothing to lose if you try to clean up. use ccleaner also.
