Unstable CPU. Need a new one.

Thread Starter
I ran prime 95 last night with my CPU at stock settings. When it woke up, I found that my computer restarted because of a BSOD. This is shortly after I put in my new GPUs, but I'm hoping that it's just a coincidence. It's been a while since I've looked at the CPU market, what's the best I can get for around $150? My MOBO is AM2+.

Edit: I just want to run whatever I get at stock.

Edit2: Apparently my mobo is AM2, AM2+, and AM3.

There was a read along time ago about degrading over time... Try and give it a .10-.30 of a volt more and run prime... That might solve your problem.

EDIT: The CPU availability for AM2+ is not very big... IMHO try to save your current until you can afford to upgrade to AM3 Board...

I reset the CMOS already and was in the process of testing it for stability. I was using it with an unlocked core for around a year and a few months of moderate overclocking. I think having the unlocked core for so long degraded the CPU. I rather just buy a new processor than add volts to make it stable again at stock settings.

Some chips need a little extra voltage at stock when unlocked.
And CPU availability for AM2+ is easy, there are no AM3 chips so far which do not run in AM2+. This will only change with Bulldozer as those will be AM3 only.

So would I be able to pop this in and be fine?

My Q6600 would Bsod on stock with prime95. Extremely anoying. I took out my hard drive and put a different one in. Issue Fixed. My HDD was to blame. Can you believe that? I could not, but i strongly suggest you take your hdd's out of that rig, install windows on any known working drive, or buy a cheap crappy one just to test with. Install Windows on in. Run prime95 small FTT with stock CPU settings and if you don't Bsod, you know your hdd was at fault just like me. (Ignore my sigrig when i say all this)

Yep, it'll be fine unless the fault you're having is not the CPU itself. (other possible causes: messed up windows, PSU failing, motherboard fault, memory fault).
