GPU coolers that actually work in 90° Rotation (FT02, RV02)? - Page 2

Epitope, you have the 2 coolers so please do test them, but I think this would help set some expectations:

Accelero S1 weighs 268 grams, and measures 138L x 215W x 33H (mm). http://www.tweaknews.net/reviews/arctic_cooling_accelero_s1_rev2_vga_cooler/index2.php

Thermalright HR-3 (I'm assuming you got the Pro?) weighs 410 grams and measures 133L x 156W x 38H mm (heatsink only) http://www.thermalright.com/new_a_page/product_page/vga/hr03plus/product_vga_cooler_hr03plus.htm

That's a LOT of weight the HR-3 is putting on your card. HR-3 may have more overall surface area because the fins are packed dense, but that also makes it harder for fans to blow through it. The S1 may actually cool equally well as the HR-3 because S1 fins are wider spaced for better air flow... without the worry of the GPU getting warped. And the S1 may actually even require one less slot than the HR-3

UPDATE: Not sure how reliable this source is, but seems like S1 is better than HR-3 in every way. On a side note, seems like you can attache the S1 with TWO 120mm fans: http://www.abchw.com/node/19

I don't think weight is such a big issue in the FT02 because the cards literally hang from the metal mounting bracket. There is not a 90 degree shear force trying to snap the card off from inside the PCIe slot like in most cases.

Also, you may have to wait a few weeks for me to test them. I have a PhD qualifying exam rapidly approaching. I don't have any time to test gpu heatsinks right now.

Edit: Besides, I don't even have possession of the HR-03 yet, still waiting for it to show up at my door.

I have a Silverstone FT02 with two HD4870 and both with an Arctic Cooling Twin Turbo Pro. They work fine.

With only one card it doesn't exceed 60ºC at 100% load. With both cards I don't surpass ~80ºC on the first card and 65ºC on the other one.

Reporting back after finally finding time to install the Accelero S1 with a Thermalright VRM-R4 on my reference 5870. Long story short, it doesn't work well in the FT02 frown.gif

I got the S1 used on ebay, and got the R4 new on SVC.com. The entire set put me back $40, which turned out to be money wasted. Used AS5 and also installed two 120mm fans on the S1 using twisty-ties. Running Furmark, temps would rise slowly linearly without end. Starts at a low 30C, then over 5 minutes, eventually runs up to 80C. Then after a couple of minutes, hits 90C and the GPU begins to underclock itself. The S1 heatsink was cool to the touch with the fans on, and really really hot when fans off. The R4 was warm and Vdimm temps were at 60C max. Overall pretty bummed in the wasted investment, and now need to find a buyer for my R4. I thought the S1 would perform OK because the heatpipes run horizontally across the heatsink (as opposed to how the Accelero Xtreme has heatpipes running vertically), but I guess the quality of the heatpipes was poor and didn't have wicks to help the fluid distribute heat optimally. The stock 5870 heatsink has horizontal heatpipes, and thanks to higher manufacturing quality, it keeps temps below 85C without GPU having to underclock itself.

Oh well, hope this helps people out. Basically if you have a vertical case like RV02/FT02, just stick with stock cooling and use headphones while gaming tongue.gif

I have an HR-03 on my 6950 and it does a very good job in this case. My fans are all on pretty low speed and the core temp tops out at about 50C in real world usage unlocked with no oc.

Not surprising as Thermalright always have high quality heatpipes. Wish I picked up the HR-03!

My results are totally different from yours.

Me and my girlfriend have a FT02. I don't have any screen from my computer after gaming, but I have some from my girlfriends one:

OC3.jpg

She have a HD5770 with a Setsugen + Gentle Typhoon at 1000 rpm aprox.

I know that a HD5770 is not a HD5870, but I have a HD4870 CrossfireX with both AC Twin Turbo Pro and never reaches 80ºC while gaming. If I increase the fans to 80% it never reaches 70ºC.

I just wanted to add that there are two people over at Hardforum reporting that the thermalright shaman works fine in their FT-02 at hardforum. I kind of wish that I went with the shaman now so I wouldn't have had to butcher any memory sinks to make them fit under the heatpipes on my HR-03.
