980x overclock questions...

Thread Starter
I just upgraded from a core 2, so I am new to my i7 board. I am now needing help as for what to do next.

After reading some threads here, I found that i need to find my max base clock, and that i should start low.

So i set my settings in BIOS as such:

Memory Multi: 6
cpu clock ratio: 14
uncore multi: 14
vcore: 1.25
dram: 1.65

From here I raised my bclk up in increments till i could not get into windows/and keyboard mouse was not responding and dropped it down a notch till i could run prime 95 stable for 30 min or so.

Its max on my board was 231.

My question is, where to turn to next.

My ram already has pretty tight timings at cas6 1600, so should i mess with this?

If not, should i just set my clock ratio to stock(25) and bump up my bclk with 1.25 vcore untill it wont boot into windows? Then add more vcore?

Or is setting it back at stock clock ratio not needed on the 980... This is where I am kinda getting confused...

Well the beauty of the 980X is that its an unlocked CPU so you can just overclock using the multiplier. So instead of raising your bclk keep it at stock and raise your multiplier.

I just raised the multiplier until it wouldn't boot anymore, then backed down a bit and added some more bclk and voltage and theeeere you go ^^ btw stock cooling or aftermarket?

Its funny cause last night i did something just like this. I raised the my multiplier up to 29 w stock voltage and ran prime 95 to ensure it was stable. I thought i was cheating the system tho, ha! I guess i over complicated things..

And I have your same cooler emokid.

So I shouldnt need to do anything with my ram im guessing... I doubt going with tighter timing w higher freq's will be benificial...

I'm running the 980X as well and when I first started I just touched up the multiplier to x31 I think and started adding vcore to sustain folding. I bumped into someone else who was making a heavier boost on his by dropping multiplier and increasing bclock... I was a bit uncertain myself at the time because I was having some trouble getting stability.

I'm on my way back to doing it the multiplier way... takes a lot of potential problems out of the equation.

^This.

Balance of these three is a patience exercise...just remember to document your process or you get frustrated. As fun as it is, it is just as much a science experiment as something you would do in your High School Science Lab. Just be sure that you practice overclocking in moderation with respect to the equipment you're using. Don't go 6GHZ on air! Good luck. Hope you put out McDonalds numbers.

Just another small word of advice, NEVER try 2 go above 4,6 GHz on this with NORMAL or even an aftermarket cooler. I tried but temps will be a pain, and with overclocks you reduce the life significantly :S

Darn right XD
But I've had some firsthand experience with pIII so i'm cautious about it
My pIII lasted only 5 MONTHS because of a high overclock
