Welcome to the [Official] Disappointed with the AMD Athalon II X4 640 (I am tempted to start this, I guess I will if 10 people total chime in here with their frustrations) Thread. You didn't Threadjack, you are contributing. If you have read through this you will see there are a bunch of us that are in the very slow 640 boat.

Amd Cool'n'quite may be the culprit to your multiplier dropping down to 4. I recommend turning that crap off until you are 100% certain you have a stable OC. 62c on a that massive cooler sounds like something is really wrong. Was it used and filled with dirt? My temps never got above 50c and I have about the smallest aftermarket cooler available and I am running 1.53vcore, which should generate a ton more heat than what you have.

Blame the CPU.

When ocing make sure your ram is getting enough voltage. Yours is higher than mine, you need 1.7 to 1.9 and I would bet your mobo's default is 1.5 or less for the ram.

Raise your Vcore also, all the way up to 1.5 wouldn't hurt. My mobo does not fluctuate more that .002 under load where as the Asus boards tend to have more of a problem of keeping it within .07. But at 1.5 your max would be 1.57 and that should be okay. Best of luck.

1.49Vcore(yay! I will celebrate mediocrity on this chip)
Ram 1600Mhz @ 1.66 Vram
Nb 1.26( I will work this down Its just stuck from my 3.75 attempt)

nope mounted the brand new hsf about 3days ago and then again the day after and once more today when i tried put the thermal paste like two lines instead of a round dot in the middle and thats the best result so far! poorly built for am3 socket I must say, cant really get it as tight as I would like. and turned of cool and quiet and all other **** i dont need when i started overclock. so its abit strange, just before the cpu is about to turn to 62degres it just goes down to 4x (980ish mhz) and just noticed that the vcore drops like h*ll to about 1v when this happens. but it dont crash or anything, the temp just go down to 55 really fast and then its back to 15x and then up to 62degres and 4x and so on....

My memories only do about 1200mhz right now havent found much about these if I'm honest so dont know how much they would handle with price tag of 40dollars a kit...



Pure budget build but thougt it would do 3.4 stabil at least....
putting some pics of cpu-z and fanspeed when I get home if i dont throw the pc trough the window!

Could you post a few pics of HWmonitor as well? I have never heard of a failsafe that drips the multiplier and voltage while the processor is under load, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. We are going to get you to Tleast 3.4 stable. Did you use the X method or two parallel lines for the Tim. Also check your fan direction to make sure they aren't opposing each other creating a warm air pocket.

changed the multipler to 14.5x so currently stable with ibt for ten rounds at maximum stress level and i could even drop the voltage some to! prime95 tonight! some progress hehe. currently at 14.5x 234fsb @ 1.4V. and i put the llc to 19% so now the vcore almost stable to! havent seen it downclock itself (yet) either since the multi went down to 14.5. and for the tim I used parallel lines. posting some pics at my newly ventilated chassi and hw monitor cpu-z and so on a little later when im done with the power tools and chassi! the fan sucktion holes and exhaust is whey to small! bottlenecks the chassi fans pretty good... atleast they blows in the right directions. well thats all for now. Thanks for the help so far!

LOL. Hit me with a link for your thread when you start the club. I'm not totally disappointed but considering this my second AMD chip I'd say the difference in ability to OC has improved (my old 6400 couldn't take a 100MHz increase without a fit). Sadly, I have not beaten my OCing experience that I had with Intel and that was with a 40USD board so I'll join in if you start it. When I get done testing what the limits are I'll hit this thread or that one with the result.

And is doing the center dot method for applying TIM a bad thing? That's how I've been doing it for years without problems.

Some people suggest if you get too much TIM it will create a deficit in cooling and that is from what I understand correct as the heat transfer of aluminum, and copper are much greater than even the most elite of TIM. The TIM is mainly used to fill in the microscopic pours in the metals involved to eliminate a hot air pocket, and help conduct better. So in reality, the thinner the better as long as there is good coverage, it is not a magical solution that keeps things cool. If it where someone would have spiked it like a Anime super heros hair, and put a fan on it.


The center dot method is fine if you have a small round Heatsink surface.



If you have a larger square one like most of the aftermarket ones today there the X of two thin lines is the best method:

Most AMD coolers use that retarded clip which does not apply the the same even pressure the 4 prong intel method does.

Its not so clean cut for the wonderful coolermaster design I am enjoying however. Its best to use a thicker TIM to fill in the surface differences then apply the 2 straight lines as making an X would just be silly.

Heres some pics but forgott to turn hw monitor on when i stressed it about 5h. it dropped to these temps when i drilled bigger holes in the back of the fanslot but in the front they were to small so couldnt drill those.... so I cut them off instead. cant se it anyway when the front are on and from the inside the fans in the way! perfect.


as you can see i'd had to put it back to 15x227 again and raise the voltage again when it didnt pass 30min of prime but ten rounds of ibt at maximum stress level and the drop havent occured maybe because it dont reach 62 celsius in current state. i'll be back with pics of hw monitor and a few new settings! hopefully higher clock...

Hampa I'd really like to know your ambient (room temps) as well as have a lot more info on your rig in general to be able to help you. I can't imagine hitting 62C at that voltage unless you're using the stock cooler and/or you have really high ambient temps.

That said I've noticed that my 640 gets hot in a hurry even below VID. I think I maxed out around 50C at 1.3 from an idle of about 28C (both numbers already have the +15C offset included). Right now I'm 2hours into p95 with 3.6GHz at 1.525 and I have to "cheat" to keep the chip from going past temps I'm not happy about. I crashed at 3.75 with this voltage before the second test finished. I guess if I wanted to hit 3.75 or 3.8GHz I really would have to be using 1.55 and I just don't know how long a chip could last with that. The idle temps from 1.3 to 1.525 changed a whole 3C (without "cheating") and the load temps changed a whole +10C (without "cheating"). And by "cheating" I'm using the cold winter nights here to lower my ambient temps to around 62F right now while having a stand fan running on max blow air through the front of my case. I guess I should think of investing in more fans for my rig if I want to keep this OC.

I know it isn't the same "model" of chip, but it's still a Propus w/ c3.

I got mine (unlocked x4) up to 3510@1.488v on air, but anything after 3250@1.388v(didn't try undervolting any) (50 above it's tri-core stock speed!) took boosts in volts. I feel if I had water I could push mine up to 3.8 or 3.9 but it'd probably take at least 1.56v or 1.59v. I was able to boot into windows with 1.55v @ 4.1ghz but P95 was instant BSOD.

For 80$ I came out pretty happy, I'd be less so if I bought the full-fledged quad version.

I crashed at 3.75 with this voltage before the second test finished. I guess if I wanted to hit 3.75 or 3.8GHz I really would have to be using 1.55 and I just don't know how long a chip could last with that. The idle temps from 1.3 to 1.525 changed a whole 3C (without "cheating") and the load temps changed a whole +10C (without "cheating"). And by "cheating" I'm using the cold winter nights here to lower my ambient temps to around 62F right now while having a stand fan running on max blow air through the front of my case. I guess I should think of investing in more fans for my rig if I want to keep this OC.

My room temps are about the same as yours and got three fans blowing in air (two in the front one in the side) and one in the back along with the raptoxx psu at 650w. artic cooler freezer extreme rev2 (apparently sucks big time and not in a good way) to cool the cpu. And the god damn drop to x4 is back and cought it on pic!
