Sennheiser 598 or 558's?

Thread Starter
So I'm looking into getting a new pair of Sennheisers, and I'm having a hard time deciding between the new 598's, or the lesser 558's. Ive searched the web and haven't found as many reviews that I would of liked to.

Does anyone have these headphones personally that could compare them for me?

Just trying to narrow the differences down before I pull the trigger.

The 598's are GORGEOUS, so that ways heavily into my decision, but we shall see.

Also, is it necessary to amp these headphones? I'm new to audiophile listening, so I'm not sure about this part. (Necessary as in they will sound a lot better, not they HAVE to have one to work.)

Thanks all!

598s are better, but it is up to you to decide if the increase in SQ is worth the additional cost over the 558s. Personally I'd get the 598s because I would always have that lingering thought of "I wonder how much better the 598s are." tongue.gif I would say a good sound card like the HT Omega Claro Halo is required, or even a entry level DAC & amp. There is no point in buying headphones like these unless you are going to give them a nice source.

558 would be more robbery proof biggrin.gif

What about the Creative X-FI that comes with the Crosshair III mobo. Would that be enough to power the 598's? Ill pick up a dac if thats not the case.

I'd buy my 580s, simply because I lust after how sexy the 598s are now.
