Those temps seem about right and are in line with what I am seeing now that summer is here. Intel lists 96C as the max operational temp for the X58 in the spec. See posts around #172 in this thread for more info. In short, try to increase airflow or take the heat-pipe off and replace the TIM.

Good to know, that's mighty toasty...

I re-arranged my cards, moved my GTX 590 to the lower PCIE (PCI_E5) slot to allow better airflow to the NB and it helped drop down temps. Now it only hits 70-71 after a long session...so 10C improvement. :-D

Anyone using the Marvell controller with a SATA3 drive? I am using the Intel right now because of the problems I've read about...

Hey guys, after a couple years with my system running on an Asus P6TD Deluxe, I had an opportunity to pick up this motherboard brand new for 100 bucks. So I rebuilt my system withthis board with some really high hopes. Everything loaded up fine, grabbed the latest bios and drivers and was all set to start OCing. However, I noticed an issue with the S3 sleep state that is slightly different than what people have described in this thread.

The system has the following: Win 7 64 bit with all updates. Corsair 1600 Mhz memory, Core i7 950 liquid cooled, seasonic 750 power supply, 2 X 6950s, 2 X SSDs, 2 X WD Black 500 GBs, 1 TB Seagate, and two optical drives. Just built and everything at stock still.

Everything runs fine but I discovered one interesting issue that I can't seem to resolve. If the PC either goes to sleep (S3 state), or if I put it to sleep, it will restart fine and run properly again. However, after going to sleep and waking up, the PC will no longer shut down properly. Instead, it will get to a point where the screen goes blank, but everything else remains on. The power light AND the HD light are solid red. The only way I can get it to power down after this, is to either hold the power buton or cut the power at the supply.

I have now tried the following with the Intel SSD and a regular 7200 RPM drive on both the Intel and the Marvel sata controller without any change in results. I have loaded Win 7 fresh and only added the video driver (in order to enable sleep state). I have set memory to 800 mhz, and added nothing else to Windows. It isn't the video drivers or the video cards because the system on my asus board went to sleep flawlessly.

If I put it to sleep in the S1 state (which is useless) or hibernate it, the issue does not occur. Only going into and coming out of S3 sleep.

Any help would be appreciated because I simply don't know what else to try.

Probably not what you want to hear, but if you are overclocking RAM be prepared for bizarre issues with S3 and this board. I've gone through several iterations of trouble tickets with MSI on this issue and all the techs were ever concerned with is whether I was overclocking anything. From what I remember BIOS 1.4 seemed to be the best if you really wanted S3 to work with an overclocked system. BIOS 1.6 final has never been reliable for me after an S3 sleep. Otherwise, I've really enjoyed this board immensely. It has been super stable running a 980x overclocked to 4.2 (on air) just barely over stock vcore. Just for kicks, run you RAM at stock speeds and vdimm and see if the problem goes away. Regards!

Thing is....I am having this S3 issue before I have even started to overclock. After reading the issues others have had with this board and the S3 state both here and in other forums, I tried a number of things including my ram at 800 mhz with 1.5 volts locked in. Nothing has changed the problem. I may try bios 1.4 but I will need to know what I am giving up going from 1.7 to 1.4 soley to get the S3 state to work.

MSI sent me the latest bios version 1.73 but it made no difference. I emailed them again. We'll see what they say. I have a hard time believing it is a faulty board given that every other aspect of the board works perfectly fine including being capable of easily overclocking to 4.5 ghz.

Sadly...with no other options to test...they stated that I should RMA the board.
