Metro 2033 -- Will my computer max it well? - Page 2

As long as you leave advanced dof and tesselation off, the game plays very well, at least for me. Oh, and unless you have a physx card, leave advanced physx off too.

But general consensus is that it'll run fine at max on DX10 settings, maybe with lower AA or Physx? Does the DX11 version make a huge difference?

You can have speedstep on and it will only ramp up to 4.2GHZ when you need it, on speedstep I bet it uses less than you're using now at stock.

DX11 adds tesselation and DOF. DOF is a big hit, tesselation a minor hit. So yes, there's a big difference.

PhysX will rape your FPS unless you get the card to do the work. I don't know how well a GTX 295 would do, but I know that when I use adv. PhysX, I limit my framerate to 18 FPS in the benchmark tool no matter what other settings I have because I have to use the CPU. I doubt anything but a dedicated PhysX card will be strong enough though.

When adv. PhysX are off, the game is completely GPU limited. So much that I get better FPS than guys with quads (I'm number 3 from the bottom): http://www.overclock.net/benchmarkin...-official.html

Get this:
http://www.gamershell.com/download_62738.shtml
Try maxing it.

Yes, they've released a demo. Go try it yourself and see if you like it. I'd recommend getting the game no matter what settings you have to run it at, 'cause I thoroughly enjoyed the story (got it for Christmas). Don't expect that a playthrough takes more than 10 hours though. The game makes up for this by actually making me want to play it again. And there's an alternative ending, so I actually have a reason to play it again

I have nearly the same rig as you.

As long as you leave the physx setting alone and keep the AA to a minimum, you should be able to max everything else out, whilst running at 1080p with a avg framerate of 30fps+ with the odd stutter here and there.

Perfectly playable and pure eye candy start to finish.

Yes, general consensus is that you'll be able to run it fine max on DX10, I think with some AA as well. Make sure no physx either

As for upgrading, other than a gpu upgrade, everything else is fine. I would just stick with your GTX295 till the gpu refreshes(7000 series from ATI, GTX600 series from Nvidia)

Sorry -- to clarify: I have Speedstep on and it usually idles @ 1.8 GHz or so, and goes to 2.8 on load. I suspect that the constant flux between some lower threshold and 4.2 might be more harmful than just letting it run on 4.2 without all the stop-and-go, but this is just speculation on my part and might be totally false.

Another question: Is DOF/Tessellation a nice thing to have? I have suspected that Tessellation is really only cool for water effects, but DOF I have not heard of (Depth of Field I am presuming?).

I think tessellation was only introduced in DX11 and since your gpu only supports DX10, I don't think you can turn it on. As for DOF, I think it would be nice to have if its Depth of Field, but, not sure what the acronym is

Tesselation is only applied to characters in this game. It makes things like shoulders more round, but it's a very subtle effect.

DOF is indeed depth of field and is pretty cool, but not all people like the effect.

Here's some pictures for you to look at:

BTW did no one notice that I posted a link to the demo?
