EDIT:I had this setup at one point. (Trifire 5770s, NO UPGRADE PATH EITHER! HOT!)
TWO 5770's = 1 5870.

3 are amazing.

I'm thinking about just 5770CF now. The other pcie lanes on my board are 8x. Not sure if that will slow the cards down or what.

The cards will be fine, dont worry about it. 8x isnt going to slow down any card. Even a 5970. Hell I had a 5850 on a 4x lane on my previous board and there was no difference going to a 16x.

There are currently issues with HD5770's in Crossfire... at least with 10.6 - current drivers. I'm trying to sell mine but don't have enough rep here to sell them with EK waterblocks

You will see little to no increase from 8x8x to 16x16x...

Hey on an x58 you don't have to use a crossfire bridge to run two 5770s?

I'll just stick with the two and overclock them as much as possible. Worse case scenario, if I don't like how it runs, one goes for an HTPC build. Anyways with two it'll run cooler, and I'll get 100% scaling when CF does work. I only play mainstream games so I shouldn't have scaling issues I'm guessing. This will hold me down until the 7000 series hit in Q2-Q3, or 8000 series in Q1 next year.

With a good OC, I would get at minimum of 80fps on BC2... hitting an upwards of 110... Honestly I've used SLI/CFX for the past 3 years and it's now hit me that they are worthless just because some games don't like it or don't use it... so it's not smart to get two mid-level cards (not almost low for 5770's) to try and compensate for a upper mid or high level card (which is what mine would work against, a 5850).

All you need is a decent cpu overclock(above 4ghz) so that they don't bottleneck.. and obviously a PSU to handle them - don't exaggerate on resolution remember 5770 is limited to only 1gb.

And if you can manage to overclock them... they fly as well - its a pretty cheap increase if you already have 2 5770.. and just adding the 3rd.. but if you were to not have any 5770's in your hand.. the best would be getting a 6950($300) then hopefully getting lucky successfully flashing it with the 6970 bios. Plus its less hassle its just 1 card instead of 3.
