Seems so, lol.

Intel is better, but not for the price you pay. If you have a trillion dollars, sure, go ahead and get yourself dual 5680's. If you're on a budget and want pure bang for your buck, go with AMD. You can get a 1090T for about $60 less than an i7 920, it will get to 4GHZ easily and it will have 2 more cores. Sure as hell, in quad core based games, a 4GHZ Intel i7 920 may be a *little* over the 1090T at 4GHZ but wait until next year when games start using 6 cores and you're stuck with a quad, saying, "I could have bought one of those AMD 6 cores for $230.00 and still be able to get decent framerates these days. Oh well, at least I followed the trend of Intel being king and queen!"

Just my opinion.

The thing is this is not going to be a gaming rig but a working rig.
I don't need a top notch cpu , just something that can handle some virtual instruments and EFX.
I could probably get my way with a Core 2 Duo but i don't want to get outdated tech because if i feel like upgrading it will cost 2x as much.
BTW, there will be 2 new sockets? 1155 and a 20XX?WTH?

Looking for a dual core? The Phenom II X2 555/565 are both great CPUs and both have a 65% chance of becoming a quad. Most Black Editions go to 4GHZ.

AMD also sells cheaper quad cores, like the 955 BE for $140.

only 1155 is coming out in january... ivy bridge wont be until q4 '11 probably...i mean even if you dont need the extra performance of sandy bridge, you should still wait because it's coming out so soon, and it'll be in the same price range as a 1156 build... you said yourself "i dont want to get outdated tech".. think you'll feel much more satisfied waiting for 1155 instead of buying 1156 and possibly having buyers remorse when 1155 comes out

So, buy Sandy Bridge
variation on a theme.....wait a couple of weeks after Sandy bridge is out, then take a look and see what pricing is like for AM3, LG1366, LGA1156 as well as sandy bridge and then decide.

You never know there might be a few bargains to be had as the vendors reposition themselves in the market.

I remember seeing a thread on SPCR and the gist of it was Intel was better for a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) build. Works better with the apps.

How do we know Ivy Bridge won't just be like Westmere was? Westmere was only Xeon processors.

I guess i'm going to have to wait.
This sucks i'm tired of not producing (my laptop has been dead for almost a month and a half).
I've been doing reading and it seems that the software i use (Ableton Live 8)isn't even fully multicore compatible yet lol.
IT runs on multiple cores in "regular" usage but when exporting it only uses one core = FAIL.

In gaming right now, with our quad based games? I agree with the first statement.

In rendering? AMD>Intel for the price, for sure. When I render I thank god I have my 1090T.

And how about overclocking? Its easier on AMD CPUs. I have used Core 2 Duos, Core 2 Quads, i7s, you name it. None overclocked as easy as a Black Edition.

And what about when games start to use 6 cores, someday?

I run apps in the back of BC2, and I can tell you my 6 core can take more than a quad i7. Hyperthreading<real cores.
