New Computer for my grandma

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

My Grandma has finally agreed with me that her pentium 4 machine is ****e.

She would like me to make her a new one that is fast but as cheap as possible

I don't think she knows or cares about intel or AMD

I was thinking Intel core 2 duo but i haven't thought any further yet

I'll do some more research today but i thought if i post on here with a budget of like $500 AUD what you guys recommend

cheers,
Bohica

M-Atx motherboard,1x1GB RAM (DDR2 or 3), AMD Dual core CPU and a single slot low profile passive GPU.

That should be a good base line.

You could try installing Ubuntu on your grandmas old comp. I did on a Pentium 4 1.6ghz with 1gb of ram and it works great.

I mean for web browsing and word processing what do you really need windows for anyway?

However, you did say you wanted a new comp. I would get her a nettop. Something like this.

Those atom's are hyperthreaded so you have plenty of processing power for any grandma to use. I've run Windows 7 Ultimate on less. The reason I would get this is because you can just mount it on the back of her monitor thus hiding it and conserving space.

If she don't play games on it get a motherboard with integrated graphics to save on money, I build them all the time for people that don't want to spend much or don't have much to begin with...

I wouldn't suggest it. My socket 939 AMD Sempron 3200+ 1.8 GHz feels a lot faster than my Atom 330 build. The D510 is only slightly faster compared to the 330.

USFORCES' recommendation is sound, although personally I'd opt for the following:
Athlon II X2 255, ~$65
AMD 880G-based mobo, ~$80
2x2GB DDR3 (cheaper than DDR2), ~$45
500GB HDD, ~$40

OKay i tried to make a cart on Umart

PSU - 500w - $22
HDD - 500gb - $41
graphics - Sapphire ATI HD4350 512M-$37
Mobo - m-atx ASRock N68-S3- $72
CPU -Phenom II 3.2ghz - $99
RAM - Kingmax 4gb(2x 2gb) - $59
Case - cooler master 341 - $48
Fans - 120mm x3(eBay) - $15
Total- $393

The other parts like dvd drive and stuff i think i can just use from her current system

I may be able to use her current case to save $48

I think its all compatible and fairly cheap

Any opinions or changes?

What PSU is it exactly? That's one area you don't want to skimp on.

That CPU seems overkill. I'd recommend an Athlon II X2 or X3 (X3 has a good chance to unlock to a Phenom II X4).

Also, you might want to look for a motherboard with integrated HD4200 or HD4250 graphics to save some money on graphics.

And you don't really need 3 120mm fans if you're not overclocking. One intake and one exhaust should be sufficient.

i just built a machine for my parents based on the 1156 platform. it consists of an i3-550, evga-p55-le, 8gb ddr3 ram, bfg 8800gt, wd caviar black 500gb hdd, lg bd-rom/dvd-r+r/rw, ocz 600w psu in a nice rosewill challenger case($30 on sale).

almost all the parts i used to make it were second hand. i had the motherboard and ram laying around, and the video card/psu i bought here on ocn.

you could build a nice i3 system if your patient and wait for someone on ocn to post the parts u need. you can find alot of nice stuff in these forums.

edit: whatever you decide to do, i highly recommend you dont go cheap with the power supply. you should definately buy a brand that is proven reliable and efficient or semi-efficient. corsair, antec, seasonic, and ocz all great brand just to mention a few.
