Htpc bsod woes

Thread Starter
I finally decided to build an HTPC to serve all of my media. Now the machine is built and its apparently got issues.

Shuttle H55J2 (300w psu fyi)
CoreI5 661 (chosen for its decent gpu which complements the boards IHDMI)
4Gb corsair dominator DDR3 1600mhz (running at 1333)
1x1Tb WD Green
1x2Tb WD Green
LG Blu Ray optical drive
Win 7 X64

I am getting random BSOD's with the stop code 9C and 124

I have tried manual ram timings, voltage adjustments to the vtt, vcore and dram all to no avail. Nothing is overclocked and in fact i am running the I5 at 1200mhz just to keep it stable (for now) so i can transfer some stuff.

I have tried running one stick of ram at a time and its the same no matter what configuration i choose between the sticks and slots.

Updated drivers and bios

Any ideas?

Sometimes it won't even blue screen but it will just lock up and i get an annoying tone out of the tv.

booted into the memtest utility win7 has and i am running 5 passes on the memory now. should several hours.

Temps are fine with the cpu sitting around 37-40 at idle and peaking at 67 right before the fan controller takes it back into the 50's.

i have raised the vtt in .5mv increments (lowest possible) up until the point that is wouldn't post anymore and my cpu fan went nuts.

still nadda.

seems like the only way to keep it stable is to drop my cpu clock to well below stock. I'm not even sure how stable that makes it but it always boots and hasn't locked up on me yet when underclocked. (just started the underclock tonight)

memtest appears to have frozen on 21%. I really hope its not the ram. This would be the second batch of corsair in a row that has been faulty. First it was some XMS2 in a build last year and now these.

I am going to buy some more ram tomorrow and give it a shot.

Frys only carries patriot, kingston and corsair. any recommendations?

I'm not sure how well Kingston ValueRAM overclocks but I've never had any problems with them compatibility and stability-wise. Heck, you're bound to see those modules in the QVL. Given there's really very little need to overclock an HTPC, I'd suggest going for Kingston 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1333 CL9 1.5V KVR1333D3N9K2/4G.

Posting back in case this helps anyone else.

I brought back the corsair dominator ram and got another set. I installed it and had the same problem so i checked the mobo specs and even though they have alot of corsair ram listed as compatible, the dominator was not in there. They did list an 8Gb kit of kingston hyperX and fry's had it in stock so i drove over, asked them to pricematch newegg and walked out of the door with 8Gb of known supported memory for $8 more than 4Gb of corsair dominator. (windows ram score went from 5.2 to 7.0)

I got home and installed it and STILL had the same problem. I think its safe to say its not a ram issue. lol
I dropped my multiplier to 20 instead of 25 (25 is stock) so now i am running my 661 at 2.6Ghz instead of 3.3 and its been solid since yesterday. It now passes all ram tests where as before it would lock up.

any idea?

I am happy since its stable and is performing great as an htpc.

Oh yea and i went to active cooling instead of passive on the H55 northbridge.
