MacPro running Windows stopped working

Thread Starter
I have a MacPro desktop computer running Windows XP Pro. I was viewing a webpage while I had a game minimized, and suddenly my screen got garbled and the computer wouldn't respond. After forcing a restart, the screen displays multiple rows of alternating black and white before shutting off, and the screen's on light blinks 3 times, stops, blinks 3 times, and so on.

What the heck happened and how can I fix it?

Looks to be a hardware failure. Apple has been known of using lower quality components. It could more than likely be your ram. Try running with only 1 stick and alternate between them.

I don't know if the 3 lights mean anything. Try reading the manual?

According to the manual, "If you see a repeating sequence of three short flashes, the display is detecting input in the wrong video format. Make sure your display is compatible with your graphics card and that you've installed the correct display software, if your display came with installation software."

I've had this computer for about 2 years without any problem like this, so I doubt it's because of incompatibility or incorrect software installed.

Now, after leaving my computer off for a while, I tried turning it on again. This time it came up as a gray screen with thin white vertical lines, but otherwise loaded Windows normally (though it's doing a disk error check now).

Sounds like the graphics card is dying. Maybe you should try baking it?

Another update: After the error checking, the computer appears to be working just fine.

What does "baking" means?

Oh wow, weird. Does this mean it is fully functional now? Working perfectly fine without that issue?

It is a method to repair fabrication processes on graphic cards I believe. You basically "bake" the card in an oven to remold the components inside. Basically a cheap and easy fabrication fixer. ...by my understanding.

I'm assuming that since you are here, the computer is no longer under warranty?

To the first question, yes. My computer does seem to be working just fine now. Booted it up this morning and didn't encounter any problems.

As for the warranty thing, that's kind of complicated to explain. But anyway, why do you ask?

Well, I've been told that Apple support is top notch and that they would most likely replace broken parts very easily. If the issue persists and you can use the warranty, it might be the easiest thing to do.

Ok yeah, this problem cropped up again just now. Same symptoms as before.

I don't know if it's just a coincidence, but in both instances, I was running a game when the problem occurred (first time I had the game minimized, second time it happened with the game active).
