MacPro running Windows stopped working - Page 4

So from what i understand you dusted out your computer right? I know this may be a longshot but doublecheck to see if all your fans are working. This really sounds to me like the graphics card is dying, and you may want to try another graphics card. Since you said your running windows, I believe your not limited to just mac hardware. Still if i were you, I'd get a spare hard drive and install OSX on it, if it boots, it may be your Windows hard drive dying.

I don't think I ever said that I deleted Mac OSX. My computer is using Boot Camp to run Windows and Mac OSX, but I very rarely use the Mac side (only for using my Bluetooth mic since Windows won't recognize it).

I didn't really have much choice in this computer setup. An outside source bought me a computer based on what my college adviser recommended that I needed for the courses. He told them to get a Mac, so that's what they did. I had no control over that. All I could do was install Windows so I could actually stand to use the thing (I personally don't like working with Mac OSX).

At any rate, I'm just leaving the computer off and checking it periodically to see if there's been any change. So far, it's still not working.

Is it onboard graphics? I'm not familiar with Apple desktops, and I know some can use regular PCI-E cards I'm well aware that they also use onboard. Would be helpful, you might be able to "upgrade" without voiding warranty and fixing the problem. Though would cost you a smidge. =P

So does it boot into osx? Just to clarify again, all you see are black & white lines right? Your graphics card is most likely dying/dead already. I recommend you take it into the Apple Store if your still covered. If not, you can always buy a cheap 8800GT to replace it with. If the new card doesnt work, then you may have to flash it with the mac bios of the 8800GT.

A cheap 8800GT can be easily found on ebay.
This is where I found instructions on flashing a regular GeForce 8800GT with a mac bios.

That's what I was leading too, you can also get AMD 5XXX series cards and flash them too. There's a bunch of mods for GFX cards out though so it's not that crazy now, not like when it started at least.

The Geforce video card may be dying in your Mac Pro since you are getting garbled screens. If it still under warranty, ask Apple to replace the problematic part(s).

justpassingthrough,
I've got the same machine as you except with 16gb ram & also running xp pro via bootcamp.I'm also new to macs and having intermittent issues with machine shutting down while gaming on the windows side that I'm trying to figure out.Apparently there is an issue running windows with bootcamp(maybe with Parallels & VMware also, not sure) that prevents the system from properly monitoring hardware stats so your fan speeds don't ramp up as your temp rises during heavy app use.I came across this thread while trying to figure it out & thought you might be interested in this possible work around http://sourceforge.net/projects/macfan/ that I found here http://forums.macrumors.com/showthre...windows&page=2.

I'm not sure if I added the links properly (total forum newb) but while I'm here and seeing as how this is an overclocking forum some mac users might find this an interesting read http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=507454.

I haven't tried the macfan tool yet myself but will be tonight.
