Fios and additional router

Thread Starter
Hello

I recently switched from Comcast to Fios and I am having a little bit of trouble with my speeds. Basically, I am getting between 200kb to 500kb a sec. I used to get 1.5mb+ off of comcast when I had that and everytime I do a speedtest (like when I am downloading something at 300kb/s I always 30mb upload and 25 download.

The only thing I can think of that could be bottlenecking me is the verizon Fios router that you have to use. The fios guy told me that I have to use this router because the video on demand on the tv uses it for that service.

Basically, I have the internet going into the fios router, and then a ethernet cable going from the router to my good router, a dlink DIR-655. The DIR-655 is gigabit and wireless n whereas the Fios router is not.

So my question is, is there a setting or something I could be missing that is inhibiting my speed? I really don't want to use this POS router, its not even gigabit. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

right sorry. It's late and my ability to create coherent posts is deteriorating.

that line should state that when I am getting what I believe to be low download speeds (like 300kb/s), I run a speed test at that moment and always obtain my advertised speeds (which are 25mb/s up and down).

Sorry about that

Get rid of your "good" router, and try the speeds. Verizon's router is fine for everything unless you need to extend the wireless connection across a few floors or you want to setup untangle, etc.

Run the verizon in home agent utility to make sure everything is configured and "optimized" correctly.

Make sure they didnt so something silly like tap into the old comcast lines which were split 100000 times before arrivign at your router or some such.

Are you wireless?

What the heck is a "good" router? Why do you want TWO routers? -_-"
Just use the fios router it is very high end.

You wont alway download at your rated, speed. The down load speed has alot to do with the server(s) your downloading from. Do you have anything directly plugged into you Dlink router? And are you using the wireless to stream/transfer files from PC to PC? If not i dont see why u dont just use the Fios router and cut the middle man . wireless G should be more than enough if all ur doing is gaming and surfing the web i would say.

Ok, I do not want to lose the Dir-655 for two reasons.

The first reason is because it is gigabit and I use it for three machines on a hardwired network. The Fios router is not gigabit so right there I am taking a pretty substantial hit to my homenetwork. I am constantly transferring data between the machines and I just don't want to lose the gigabit speeds

The second reason is because of the wireless N. I do use the extended range quite frequently and also like the increased speed over the wireless network.

I did run the verizon home agent and performed the optimizations (what the hell does this do anyways). It didn't really help anything. When they installed the connection I made sure the modem was the first stop on the route. It goes right from the fios box on the wall (where the fiber connects into the coax cable) and then to the router. It then splits into the old wiring for the televisions.

I am wireless depending on the machine I am using. I have two laptops, a netbook, a android phone using the wireless at any given time in addition to a PS3 console.

I understand I shouldn't always download at my rated speed and that the speed will only be as fast as its slowest part, but there are some websites I should be getting good speeds from. Steam for example has only hit 990 kb/s (before the holiday sale). I used to get about 1.2mb/s to 1.6 mb/s on the Comcast. I downloaded a driver from AMD's website tonight at 300 kb/s. I also used to get over 1mb/s at this website. I don't bittorrent or anything so this is strictly downloads off of websites.

I tried just the Fios router before I put the Dlink into the network. The download speeds seemed to work better without the Dlink but I only tested it for like a day or so

I was just wondering if I was doing something wrong as I never piggybacked two routers like this before.

Thanks for all the responses

This line leads me to believe that its your Dlink router is not set up properly and is causing the bottleneck. Try connecting straight to the other router and testing speeds, then add in the Dlink router and try again. See what the drop is.

Also if you're testing at 30mbit/s, it might just be the server your trying to pull data from is limited the speed. Try torrents or a faster server and see what your speed is then.

Seems to me like your dlink and your fios router dont wanna play nice with eachother, gonna have to make some sort of sacrifice here or figure out what the conflict is.

That said, why does your fios router not have wireless N? It should... They gave you a VERY outdated model. The two latest versions of their router have wireless N. Ask for a new one
