Overclocking AMD Phenom II 955 BE

Thread Starter
Since I finally got myself a different cooler than the stock (Thermaltake Contac 30) I figure I may go for a overclock and see how far I can get, what's the best settings for this chip to bump it up... the multipliers etc..?

As of right now I have the chip running at 3.4Ghz with 200.00 x 17 {1.3000 Vcore}

Idle temps are 30 - 33 C
Max temp recorded so far: 38 C

Can this chip hit 4 GHz on air and if so around what volts would I need?

Well I'm no expert but if you are hitting 30-32 C idle maybe not 4 Ghz on air. I'm using a stock HSF on my athlon x3 with a minor 3.4 Ghz oc and i idle at 24c.

I have been experimenting with overclocking this chip for about six months...

With your cooling I think a stable 3.7-3.8 could be achieved using multiplier alone. However, in addition to overclocking you cpu you should consider a cpu-nb overclock and tightened ram timings. This will yield the best real world performance increase.

Some questions I have:

Are you running a c2 or c3 chip?

What is your RAM's stock timing and speed?

What do you do with your computer, gaming, rendering, media???

Have you used 3dmark06? If not download it! It is a good way to measure changes in performance (though it is dated and is not perfect).

I will answer any follow up questions you have, let me know

Download Prime95 and run for 10 minutes with the Small FFTs selected at start, then report max temps.

Overclocking should be easy, since it's a black edition. Just pump up the multiplier slowly.

Will try it out, but I really don't see how it would matter much since my CPU rarely touchs 100% load, and when it drops off 100% it cools down rather fast.

I always like to start high then work my way down. Try 19x211 @ 1.45v that will give you an overclock of 4.09Ghz overclocked. Run prime 95 monitoring temps making sure they stay below 60c. If you notice instability take it down to 200x19 and test again. If your temps get too hot back down off the v-core a little bit. Hope that helped.

Remember raising the CPU frequency also overclocks your RAM.

Still, it's good to know how hot it gets. 42c seems fine to me. Try to stay under 55c when stress testing.

You can either try the way Charles proposed or go slowly pumping the multiplier and when it gets unstable raise the vcore a bit.
