Hey guys, I've been looking through these forums recently because I've wanted to overclock my Alienware Laptop. However, it seems most topics are geared towards people that have a general understanding of how and what to do. Can someone help me out? Or at least get me started?

First off. Let me ask you this.
Are you able to OC in the BIOS?

I have no idea what that means at all.

Also, no idea of what setfsb is. Can anyone start me off? I would greatly appreciate it, and I'm sorry for my cluelessness.

Hi there.
I'm not being mean, but one of 2 things are affecting the overclocking of your laptop
1. It is a laptop, and it whould require extra cooling to overclock, something laptops don't have.
2. you can't overclock a laptop....
3. Even if you could, you will probably melt it.

Sorry mate!

Alright, I guess my hopes are dashed. But not for long. I have an X-Mas IOU from my wife, and she says she'll buy me a new gaming laptop, or help me pay half if it's over 2,000$. So, I guess I have a new question:

Any laptop recommendations, preferably best performance laptop recommendations? The reason I asked the overclocking question anyway is because my old M-17 Alienware isn't cutting it anymore, and it's starting to sputter at some of the games I'm now trying to run, like ArmA 2 and Civilization 5.

Looking at the Alienware specs now, I'm thinking maybe just choosing the priciest CPU, or the one with the most GHz is not the right answer. Any tips on choosing or what laptop or parts to look for?

EDIT: I was going to buy this one for the 9.4 rating from computershopper. Even rated higher than the M17.

Wrong... please stop making sweeping statements about laptop over clocking. There are many models and brands available that can handle a few hundred extra MHz on both their GPU's and CPU's. EG. My lappy w/ i7 740qm at stock 1.7 ghz will not surpass 78'C during a 24hr prime run. I can easily push it to the 2.1 GHz mark w/o temp issues 88'C during 24hr prime. My major issue is that my psu cannot handle both my GPU and CPU OC'd.

Now that that is out of the way. OP DO NOT BUY ALIENWARE!!! You will pay huge $$$ in alien tax when you can get a Sager or Asus G73JW more power for less money. Both have cooling, power management, and more customization options. Alienware (before dell) used re branded Sager laptops.

Is there any particular reason you can't get a desktop instead?

The best advice any can give you is to not attempt overclocking if you don't know what you are doing. I know this sounds not quite right, after all, how are you supposed to learn something if you can't actually do it at all? By reading. That is the first and foremost thing anyone attempting to get into overclocking should do. You need to have a basic understanding of how the hardware communicates and functions and also what all the different settings in the BIOS do. It's a daunting task and for good reason. There is a lot of information involved in overclocking.

I can tell you this. If you are into PC gaming and want to get into overclocking you will not buy another laptop. That would be your first mistake. Instead consider investing in a custom build for a desktop PC. Not only will you get more powerful hardware, but it will be cheaper as well and you can add some hefty aftermarket cooling for overclocking. Overclocking generates more heat and you increase voltages and frequencies and it's not something you want to even begin to attempt without the proper cooling. Plus, laptops are typically downclocked to begin with or have features disabled to lower power consumption and reduce heat output.
