Replacing my 8800GT; recommendations?

Thread Starter
so, after 1.4 million points, over a year of folding 24/7, PLUS countless hundreds of hours of gaming...

my poor little 8800GT has finally given up the ghost. anything more strenuous than super meat boy, and my PC locks up tight. i knew i was going to have to replace it soon (hello min-specs for witcher 2! D: ), but i was hoping to put it off for as long as possible.

this also comes at the worst possible time, given the fact that i just spent a lot on steam gifting games to others, and am currently at a funding nadir. :\\

what i am considering:

GTS 450: nvidia website says it's a DX11 card that's about on par with the old 260s. 192 cores is definitely an improvement over my 8800GT's 112. also, DX11, etc.

OR

GTX 460:
coming in at over 300 cores, this would triple my 8800GT's power. attractive, yes, but quite possibly overkill.

other factors: as i mentioned earlier, my budget's tight due to the holidays. also, my existing rig (dual core, low-ish resolution @ 1440x900) may waste the 460's power.

what do you all recommend?

i defiantly think the 460 is a better buy, your res may be low, but you be able to play games as higher settings and it will be more "future proof" than the 450

Go 460. Both are great jumps from the 8800gt but 460 is alot better. Now as for wasting 460 power it wont mater that much. You see its very tolerable, as long as u dont look at benchmarks ur okay. Plus with high end cpus ppl get ,for example, 100fps while u get 70-80. U lost fps, well yea, but its not bad. And if u oc ur cpu to 3.6-4.0 u wont waste the 460's power.

What is your actual budget? There might be some better options out there.

yeah i would say the 460 would be good, also since you fold it will do better I would assume considering the amount of cores jump. Hell I would get a 470 if you could afford it if it alot better then the 460 not sure. Unless you are just going between the 450 and the 460 then 460 ALL THE WAY! lol

Black he wont need a 6870 for gaming at 1440x900. Hell the HD4870 I had maxed everything when I first bought it
