Win7 Install Timing

Thread Starter
First and foremost I have never done any of the following before, but I feel confident and learned enough to proceed, except for one step. So please, treat me as such a newb. Being so inexperienced, I tend to include much unnecessary information in situations like this, so please, bear with me. And I honestly have NO clue how to look this specifically up.

I will be buying, and installing a new mobo (ASUS M4A785-M) and CPU (Athlon II x4 640) very soon (as in tomorrow), and at the same time I'm planning to install Windows 7 Professional (64bit, legit) over my current Vista 32bit, for obvious reasons.
Now the current OS is on my old 250GB HD (dual partition C and D, it's on C <- primary), and I'm planning to replace that with Win7.
I have a much newer 1TB which is not half filled up yet, so I'm going to back up everything I want to keep from the old onto the new.

Now from here I'm not 100% sure about anything. I've been receiving a lot of help from two members here, but they're not available ATM, probably aren't going to be by the time I'm finished installing the mobo/CPU tomorrow, and I'd like my worries resolved so I can proceed relaxed.

Basically:
Will there be any conflicts if I don't format out Vista and install Win7 right away following installing the new mob/CPU? I partially recall being told something like that, but again, I'm not sure.
<- that's the main cause for all this confusion

And just a simple side question: With 95% of my programs on the old HD, after moving all those to the new drive, will there be a problem with just simply copying them all back on the the old after the format/install new OS?

Is there a specific reason you don't want to format it? I mean, if you take everything off there that you want to keep, then it's safe to format it.

Or, are you hoping to perform an Upgrade type of install?

It is true that 32-bit to 64-bit is not a possible upgrade path, but here's what I don't know yet: does the installer automatically format when all you do is select your drive and then click next?

But you asked if there will be any conflicts if you don't format first.

What did you mean by "if I don't format out Vista and install Win7 right away"?

Oh, erm... oh dear, bad phrasing of the question. -.-
I meant, will there be any conflicts if I don't install the new OS right away after the mobo install.
Because I remember something like "the old OS's _____ will register on the new mobo" or something like that.

It's kind of a nonsensical questions, even to me, I'm just, a huge worrywart.

I'd say the best thing to do is back-up everything you want from the 250GB to the 1TB. Then format the 250GB hard drive (I use GParted to do so). After that install all of the new parts that you ordered. Finally, install Windows 7, works every time for me.

So format the primary, old drive first?
Either way, whether I format first or not, what about after? Do I need to install Win7 right away?

I see I've once again confused my helpers.
