i7-950 w/ Thermaltake Jing question

Thread Starter
I have an i7-950 that I've had clocked at 3.9 for a few weeks (dropped it down from 4.04 due to heat), and it's been okay except hot under load. I thought it was just bad luck on chip batch (# 3041A371) but I set everything back to stock today out of curiosity and redid burntest.

This cap was taken after having run intelburntest with those settings for 5 reps, then restarting it. Taking note of the realtemp section.

Cooler is a Thermaltake Jing with Noctua 120mm NF-P12's pushing and pulling (low noise setting, not ultra low) and a Noctua NF-S12B at max sucking out of the case right next to the cpu fans.

I followed artic silver's instructions for putting on the arctic silver 5. Did I screw it up? Ambient temp around 28 ish centigrade/celsius

Heat is to be expected with a 130w TDP processor. At first i thought the cooler wasn't big enough but from pictures it is. What case do you have?

I'm not entirely sure of the model, but it's a 3-4 yr old coolermaster mid-tower with the front of the case entirely mesh, mesh above the cpu and graphics card area, 120mm exhaust mesh at the cpu height in the back of the case. There is also one of the original thermaltake jing 120mm fans that I've mounted next to the cpu cooler that blows across the motherboard next to the cpu, which has dropped the m/b temp in bios about 20 degrees, with the slot covers removed so the air has somewhere to go (gtx570 is mounted in the lowest PCIx16 slot to allow for room).

Sounds like the case is probably the issue. Ever consider stepping up to a bigger one?

Okay, I have removed and refitted the cpu cooler 5 times now. No matter what method I use to apply AS5, the temps are the same. They don't change at all. Thick, thin, single line in centre, smeared out with a c/c, circular blob in the centre... Nothing improves it. I've removed it from the case. slight improvement (2 degrees maybe). And yes, cleaning as per Arctic Silver's reccomendations.

How do you know if the heatpipes of a cooler are actually functioning? ie. got the right liquid in them? When I stop the fans, after 30 sec the temp only goes up 3 or 4 degrees. I thought it would rocket up...
