Need a new headset (RAZER Carcharias rant)

Thread Starter
I recently bought the Razer Carcharias and I am pretty disappointed with the quality of the product.

The story starts with my old Plantronic GameCon 377 breaking. Since I had them for almost 2-years I was pretty satisfied with the duration, quality and price for these. Being a FPS gamer, I was curious to try out something that would be a step up from my Plantronics.

I saw the Sound Blaster Tactic3D Alpha at Best Buy so I decided to give them a try. I liked them a lot--good sound quality, excellent mic quality, but I didn't like the build of the headset. It felt like it was a small rumble away from breaking, the cans pinched my ears and after about 20 minutes, my ears would get all hot and sweaty from the faux leather padding on the cans.

Seeing that I wasn't completely satisfied with my purchase, and being well within the 30-day return period, I decided to try out the Carcharias' and return the Creative's.

So far, these have been a pretty disappointing choice. The open-ear design is cool because I like hearing my voice and the small things around me, very comfortable cans, but the sound quality is decent and the mic is AWFUL--Googling "RAZER Carcharias mic" will actually bring you back to OCN and another posters problem with the Carcharias' mic. There is so much feedback on the mic it's ridiculous. There is this constant hum and vibration--I have toyed with volume settings, boost settings and sample/bit rates (like the other poster did).

Nothing eliminates this poor mic quality. So, I guess I'm back to reviewing my options and going after another headset.

I have a Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty soundcard and I am looking to spend $80-$100 on a quality headset.

Everyone is telling me to go with Steelseries Siberia V2, but I'm hesitent because I would have to order them online and wouldn't want to deal with returning and online order if they turned out like the Carcharias.

TBH,

I would go with the Audio Technica AD700s which are open ear as well. And you can pick up a decent desktop mic for 4-5 bucks. Which will sound better than most build in mics redface.gif

All of this can be had for under 100 bucks.

I, at first, got feedback from my carcharias mic, but with adjustments in the various control panels eliminated it just fine.
Of course, there is always the possibility that I got lucky.

If you don't like the open design then the siberia's are not for you they are open as the AD700 as well.

What you are looking for are some closed cans. Firstly what's your budget? Secondly do you mind a regular pair of headphones with a separate mic?

Open or closed design, it doesn't really matter, but I just don't want this enormous feedback from the mic. I don't want a standalone mic. Just a great quality headset to use primarily for FPS gaming, music and movies. Connecting through 3.5mm jacks.

Looking to spend $100

Unfortunately, between the W7 controls, the Creative Console, and the Steam chat setting, I can't remember all the stuff I did. All I know is that it was a combination of turning down the microphone levels and adjusting the volume.
I did notice that although W7 was telling me that the volume of the mic was very low, it worked fine in chat.
Sorry I could not be more help.

Definitely go for the audiotechnica ath-a700 or the ath-ad700. Both are in those price range and will work well, sound good, and can be used in conjunction with an external mic or the zalman clip-on mic.

^^ this.
grab a pair of ad700s and dont look back
i went from a pair of Carcharias to AD700s and it was like night and day
also, just grab a desktop mic. whats the big deal in having it attached to your headphones? youd look like a fool walking around if you like to use headphones.

desktop mic + ad700's = win. try it out

i simply fixed mine by not using usb devices on my front pannel
so my microphone and headset jacks had a grounding issue mostlikely

anytime i had a microphone jack with usb devices hooked up in the front.... the output sounded similar to the transformer movies with that electronic whirring noises it was annoying but cool at the same time
