[solved] Windows 7 installation freeze/hang

I'm having some strange issues overall with this PC.

The current issue is that the Windows 7 installation freezes. It happens after the first automated restart.
It goes: enter basic info -> copy, expand files -> reboot -> Windows logo shows up -> nothing happens after this.

The Windows logo moves (the colors/lighting changes periodically) so the machine and process aren't fully frozen. The process just sits at the logo and never seems to advance. I left it up for close to a half hour and nothing changed.

What could be the problem? Should I try waiting longer?

I tried installing off of a disc as well as a USB stick (different source data too) so its unlikely that the install files were copied corrupt. I don't think RAM is an issue because I have been using them for a year or more without issue.

Test the hard drive with a diagnostic utility. Could be the drive.

You've eliminated RAM and data sources.

SOLVED!

The problem was indeed the drive but NOT a hardware issue.

For the sake of helping others that may run into this or a similar problem in the future I'll explain the issue.

The problem was that I had remnants of a gpt partition table on the drive that I didn't clear before running the installer. I did clear all partitions using the drive configuration in Windows setup and created new ones but this apparently did not clean it. I used parted to manually convert the lable to msdos and it worked.
