HELP: Transform into a HTPC or sell and buy new?

Thread Starter
Hey guys, wondering if you can help me out here. I've recently been intrigued by HTPC's and was looking to sell my current setup and buy either a revo 3610 or just a boxee box + external hd.

I thought I was just going to sell my rig and buy new, but now I'm possibly considering just upgrading/redoing my current rig? The only reason why I'm not looking to keep mine now is because its loud as a horse and heats my room up like no tomorrow.

Setup is as follows:

Core 2 Quad Q6600 (running at 3.2 stable)
Asus P5Q Vanilla MOBO
Patriot Viper Series DDR2-1066 (2x2GB)
OCZ Vendetta 2 w/ Arctic MX-2
Antec Atlas Server w/ TruePower Trio 550W PSU
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500GB SATA2 3GB/S 7200RPM 16MB Cache NCQ Hard Drive OEM
Samsung SH-S202J DVD+RW 20X8X16 DVD-RW 20X6X16 DL 12X IDE Black DVD Writer OEM W/ Vista SW
BFG GeForce 9800GT OC+ 635MHZ 512MB GDDR3 PCI-E Dual DVI-I HDTV Out DIRECTX10 Video Card
LG DVD+RW writer w/ lightscribe
160GB WD harddrive as well.

I think it's potentially just the case + PSU that's killing it? Or the OCZ Vendetta 2??

Should I just sell it and buy either a revo and add boxee or just use boxee itself?

Thanks!

EDIT: Also will probably have to change up the GPU anyway? No HDMI just the dual dvi...

Keep that and upgrade as needed. Get a media center / htpc case, put the Q6600 back close to stock to get rid of excess heat and use a quieter HSF. As for the GPU, anything from a $30 4350 on up will work depending on if you want to do any gaming.

A bit overkill for a HTPC, but if you got it, use it.
As said, put the 6600 back to stock clocks/volts and you can get by with a smaller cooler (but depending on the case you choose, the current one may work).
The 9800 GT is overkill and uses a lot of power (and heat) even at idle. A 4350/5450 or GT 220/240/430 would be just fine (basically almost any current gen card without a 6 pin plug would work).

Hrmm, thats for the quick replies guys.

Just wondering though, a new case + heatsink + gpu would take care of the loud noise?

I dont mind downgrading to a revo or just boxee though, wouldn't it be easier + more compatibility possibly?

Plus, I'd essentially be paying the same almost (for a new case heatsink, etc) sort of?

Well it depends on what fan is causing the loud noise.

Personally I would run a HTPC before a Boxee or Revo Box but that is just me.

It all depends on what you want to do. You do have a few more options with a true HTPC.

I have 3 HTPC's in my house. They all have TV tuners (1 is a dual tuner and the other 2 are single tuners, so I can DVR 4 shows if I wanted), HULU Desktop and Netflix, as well as access to all my ripped movies, as well as being able to use tham as regular computers if needed (1 never does, 1 does occasionnaly, and 1 is the kids, so it sees equal use for both).

As for cost, if you can shop around and find some deals on some decent stuff, sell off the 9800GT to recoup some cost.

Sell the GPU, CPU, and mobo.

The price you get from just the Q6600 alone would get you a better suited CPU, motherboard, and IGP.

For a HTPC, an AMD IGP is better than a 9800GT due to acceleration support.

Yeah, the only benefit towards having a HTPC is the ability to download and run everything without streaming/SMB.

I won't be watching much TV on this. Although I do have cable hooked up to the tv, I download most of my shows anyway so I won't have much need for a tuner. It's more so just to watch downloaded/ripped avi's and stuff more or less. Probably won't be on netflix too much either but it is an added bonus.

@duckieho Which series of AMD's do you think I should be leaning towards? Do you also think the HTPC > revo w/ boxee installed combo or just the boxee standalone??

My ultimate goal is just to have something discrete, hidden, and quiet. Which is the complete opposite of my current setup lol

Atom/ION (ergo Revo) doesn't play nicely with Netflix HD (stutters). It might look good on paper but having some CPU power to fall back on is essential for minimizing headaches.

You could probably sell some parts and still have funds leftover after buying a "downgraded" machine.

AMD 880G motherboard ~$70-$90
AMD Athlon II X2 ~$60-$70

No, need for a 880G. A 785G is fine... same IGP but fewer PCIe lanes.
2GB is fine.

Microcenter has an instore deal.... Athlon II X2 + 785G mobo for $60-80.
