HELP: Transform into a HTPC or sell and buy new? - Page 2

On my last Newegg scavenge, I've found 785G (DDR3) and 880G boards to be at price parity. Heck, some 880G boards were even cheaper than 785G so I figured might as well go with new tech. If he can find a deal such as the one you posted, though, then by all means, go with the 785G. Not that many Micro Center outlets, though. Closest Micro Center to me is more than 50 miles away.

lol ya living in Canada so I'm just lurking online for deals atm. thanks for all the help so far guys.

is the general consensus to completely sell and redo a new system? 880g it is then?

All thats really required then is new case, board w/ integrated graphics, x2, ram, and just use my old hd?

EDIT: Hrmm actually I might go 880G route, it may "future proof" me somewhat?!

Playing 1080p would be fine on the 785?

Main thing I'm looking for in the mobo is HDMI correct?

Either of those should work fine. If you're selling your parts piecemeal, you could just keep your DDR2 RAM and go with the 785G DDR2 board.

Ok sounds good. I think I may just go 880G depending on how costs work for future proofing reasons.

Can anyone help me understand this:
Quote:
Radeon HD 4250 does not support multichannel LPCM/Dolby TrueHD/DTS-HD (HRA and MA) over HDMI
Will I have any particular problems with hooking this HTPC up with 5.1 HTIB setup??

Also, one more noob question lol, this should theoretically all fit in a microATX box right? are there any requirements I should be looking at when picking out parts?

Thanks againn

jwei I just priced out a new HTPC for a friend and it came to $300 for motherboard, cpu, ram, BD-rom and powersuppy.

If you can get your hands on a 785G am2+ mobo you won't have to buy new memory and will save $50. And subtract $50 for the BD-rom if you don't want that and another $40 for powersupply.

@duckieho I thought people were having issues with the 785G chipset trying to play 1080p, I believe it was some sort of a stuttering issue.

Hrmm alright I will look into it. I already have a PS3 so bluray is already taken care of. I'm more concerned with performance in the long run? As you stated will the 785 stutter?

I seem to recall the stuttering issue was mostly present when paired with an AM2 CPU.

As for the issue of multi-channel audio, the 785G and 880G chipsets support 5.1 DD/DTS bitstreaming and stereo LPCM. They don't support multichannel LPCM, though.

I initially had issues with my 785g paired with a 2400-BE x2 (a 2.3 GHz 45w Brisbane CPU) on a Gigabyte AM2+ board. Had issues with HD TV playback (the stuttering refered to above) and horrible lag with HULU on 1080p. I got a HD4350 and that fixed the issue.

...
About a month ago I was moving some parts around and decided to give the 785g (on a Gigabyte AM3 board this time) another try, but with a Sempron 140. Suddenly, no issues at all (on the same Windows 7 install). I did notice the CPU was running at or near 100% usage with HULU (and was causing the CPU to run hot and the stock HSF to run fast and loud), so I put an Athlon II x2 in it and is all good now.

I used to be against the 785g for HD 1080 playback, due to my previous experience.
With the changes I made, I now I say go for it, but with a note: only with AM3 CPU's. A Sempron 140 will work but would highly recommend at least an Athlon II x2 since that is my personal experience. An AM2+ x4 may work as well (but would probably cost more).

Alright, super thanks for all the help guys.

Rep + to everyone lol.

So I'll likely go with 785/880 MB, 4gb ram (might as well), athlon II x2, and a nice microatx case?

Are there any specific requirements that I need other than HDMI in the mobo?

Also, will I notice any material/significant performance increases from going 785/880?

(any no more q6600 right?? lol)
