yeah...

a 1100T would do the job but for damn near the same price I can buy a 6128. so which one will perform better for encoding video?

also, I do like the idea of green computing

But that MC is a stock speeds....

I am pretty sure a 4.2GHz i7 quad would beat it for less.

For about $1200, a 4.5GHz i7 hex-core would destroy a MC@2GHz.

Green computing is a fallacy.... computing has been about performance/watt or task/watt for over a decade. Marketing just threw a title on it.

This is my assumption of what I've done on my own system

I think it all depends on really just overclocking a cpu... I found that on my hardware compared to stock 3.4ghz to overclocked 4.2ghz I saved up over about almost 1 hour - comparing rendering the same video files with effects.

So I would go building a setup which can assure it can overclock the highest that you could handle(temps for your area / cooling used).. since video rendering will certainly improve just by that.

Also make sure you have a 4XX or 5XX that will also help if the software you are using utilizes the gpu while rendering(that will fly ten times more).. but not all use them(i wished all did).

I have never used any of those 6 cores or 8 cores cpu's so I have no clue the difference how it feels there.. so get one those on which you could overlock like a beast. And certain if you had a budget of $4k that suggested hardware previously mentioned is insanely awesome.

I know what you are saying and I agree with you. If it was as simple as saying that CPU-A does X-Mflops/watt and CPU-B does Y-Mflops/watt this would make things so much easier. My question from the beginning should have read,
"where can I find a database that shows performance/watt numbers of modern desktop and server cpus?"

As for the green thing, Ive had water cooled cpus in the past that used in part to heat my house in the winter. Ive seen the efficiency die when voltage is ramped up. given your intel scenario, would that OCed Intel still have the efficiency to surpass the MC?

Hmm how about just waiting for a couple more days and grab an i7 2600k plus a dual socket board (if there'll be releasing any) and oc it to 5ghz on air?

http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html

This shows the 1100t having about 15% more processing power than the 6128 at stock speeds. OC that 1100t and you'll crush the 6128.
