Partial New Build Coming Up…Need Advice…Nvidia Based

Hi all, not sure where to put all this since this is a combination of a Hardware & Software question. I apologize if I should have broken this question up instead.

I am getting ready to work on setting up my new build. I’m moving to a new motherboard, SLI, more RAM, new Case & new OS setup.

My main reason for the upgrade is this: I originally had CrossFire 4850’s setup on a Gigabyte EP45-UD3P. But I wanted to go DX11 and the EVGA 460 came down in price so much. I picked up one, and the performance was the same as my 4850 crossfire setup. So I picked up a second to SLI, but the UD3P motherboard doesn’t officially support it (at the time, I don’t think the BIOS hack existed to make it work). I thought if I found a decent EVGA SLI motherboard I would switch to that.

Here is the breakdown:
Original New
Motherboard EP45-UD3P nForce 750 SLI FTW
RAM 4 Gigs (DDR 2 1066 Mhz) 8 Gigs total
PSU 850 W Same
Video Cards 4850 1 GB crossfire 460 SC 768 SLI
Cooling Hyper 212+ (Push/Pull) Same
Processor QX9650 (OC to 3.6) Same
HD 1 @ 500 GB, 1 @ 1 TB Same
Case NZXT Guardian Azza Full Tower?
OS 2 Bit Vista 64 Bit Win 7

My four main questions are this:
1)Does anyone see a problem with this hardware setup? Any opinions or suggestions?

2)Do I upgrade the OS first, then the hardware? Or the other way around? I think the other way around since most likely the OS will think it’s a new hardware build anyway. But Just wanted to double check.

3)Most of my games are managed on Steam. Going to 64 Bit Win 7, I’m guessing all my applications including steam will need to be reinstalled (which I have installed on a secondary drive) Is the Saved game folder is the only folder I need to backup? Anyone have any problems with something similar when upgrading? I know I’m going to have to reinstall everything including games & mods.

4)My most played games are: Rome: Total War (best ever), Medieval: Total War, GTA IV & Men of War. Has anyone experienced any problems going from 32 bit Vista to 64 Bit Win 7 on these?

As always thanks all, appreciate the help.

1) I see no major issues. I'm not a big fan of that particular board. It's not like it's a bad board, I just didn't care for it personally. The NB fan is really loud on it, and I found the physical layout to not be very optimal. Other than that it's fine.

2) Upgrade HW first, then format the OS drive and re-install OS

3) As long as you have your steam folder on a separate drive from the OS, you should be able to just re-install the steam application to that same folder after you do the OS and most (if not all) of the steam games should just work. Games that aren't actually steam games will need re-installed though.

You definitely will want to backup your entire Documents folders (both yours, and the shared docs), as it's possible not every save game file will be in your Saved Games folder. Honestly I'd back up your whole c:\\ drive before you do this process just in case.

4) No idea.

Thank you very much, that's awesome advice. For some reason I didn't an X48 chipset would fit my processor. Any particular X48 board you recommend?

Oh, wait ... nevermind ... x48 doesn't do SLI w/o the SLI hack, that's the issue there.

Just grab the 750 if it's a good deal, it's an OK board, really, lots of other people loved it ... just not me

Cool, yea was just reading up on it and wasn't sure it supported SLI. Thanks again.
