mobo blew up [pic]

Thread Starter
hey all. new to forum. new to overclocking. fried my mobo <pic> last night. the wd passport that i had plugged in is no longer working as well (it clicks). for a while, the quad passed POST, showed the 'press del to enter setup', only showed that i had 1 cpu (usually shows 4) and locked up. i cleared CMOS and now i can at least get my 4 cpu's back, but an error pops saying that the cpu has changed. but i get by this by pressing F1 and well...i cant get into windows due to a bootmgr error that was from an install problem way back ago...so i am assuming that the next step after resolving that would be booting into windows. was going to install a fresh win 7 today...speaking of which

ALL THIS HAPPENED 8 hours before i get my 5770, new cpu cooler, and 25-M SSD. ugh. i have them in my hand now!

to talk about cooling: im usually running at about 46-50C during regular use, which is what i was doing when the mobo blew. under torture, the highest temp at stock fsb was 71C, while at 333x9 the temp rose to a high of 73C. i didnt run for more than 1 hour this is using an aftermarket cooler, but my friend who sold me his this rig had installed it so i dont know much about it other than it has fins and core contact pipes and a 90mm fan.

2 questions:
1) can an overclock do this?
2) should i be using my mobo?

notes:
q6600 g0 @ 333x9 w/volt @ auto. that is the only change made. everything else stock settings. been running smooth for about 2 weeks.

Scary! For a Mobo to just blow up like that... Cant really think of any reasons why it would, but im pretty sure some people other than me can shed some light into this ^_^

As far as using your mobo, dude it has a hole in it....

I can't see how an overclock would blow up that section of your mobo, but I'm not an electronics expert so that's just my opinion.

What did you set the voltage(s) to on the mobo for your over clock?

Give us a full description of the sig rig in user control panel so we can get a proper look at things.

As for the board I've got no idea what could cause that but that board is now wall art.

Wow this really sucks mate, by the pics it looks like over voltage or short could have done this but that's still skeptical. IMO I wouldnt use that mobo no more to be safe. You don't want it to kill other parts. RMA?

Oh also maybe a power surge could do this also.

sorry, i must have unchecked the 'show sig' on accident. voltage was stock, er, auto. if i recall it was usually around 1.25ish.
and the part that blew was the same as the W16 light green piece below it. all the usb's and the firewire have one. maybe a controller? you can see its skin near the screw hole above it.

When did you buy the board by the way? Any chance it's still under warranty?

its my buddys old rig from late 2007. it worked fine for him the whole time. he wasn't OC'd, tho.

the wd passport that was plugged in--could that have something to do with it? or is it just a victim?
